4 Reasons Axe Throwing Is The Perfect Hamilton Winter Activity

4 Reasons Axe Throwing Is The Perfect Hamilton Winter Activity

Winter in Hamilton has its fair share of family activities, from public skating, to Christmas workshops, or walks along the Brow to see the city all lit up – it’s all very nice. But what if you want something a little less… vanilla? What if you want to get a group of friends together and try something new, something that looks awesome, allows you to compete with your friends for bragging rights, and serves as an exciting way to start or finish a night out?

Well, there’s an answer, and it might not be the one you expected. At the beginning of December, BATL (Backyard Axe Throwing League) opened up an axe throwing venue near Jackson Square, and it is amazing. When you book an axe throwing party with your friends at BATL, you get private lanes and instructions from an expert axe thrower– and then you get to hurl a freaking axe through the air and watch it splinter into a target! So, yeah, it’s pretty awesome. To celebrate the arrival of an axe throwing league in Hamilton, here are 4 reasons why it’s the perfect Hamilton winter activity.

Baby It’s Cold Outside

You want to have fun and do exciting activities, but all the parks are freezing cold, and the soccer fields and basketball courts are often covered in snow anyways. When it gets cold enough that you can’t even feel your face, that’s nature telling you to move your activities indoors. Axe throwing takes place on indoor lanes (like bowling, but, you know, cooler), where you can warm up while you throw down.

It Looks Cool As Hell

Yes, “cool as hell” is an oxymoron, but it’s a good oxymoron for describing axe throwing. Light up your Instagram or Facebook with pictures of you hurling an axe, and people are sure to take notice. You can’t attend any activity these days without someone snapping a bunch of picture of it, so you might as well look good. If it’s cool enough for medieval knights, it’s cool enough for all of us.

The Spirit Of Competition

Aside from learning how to throw an axe, when you book an axe throwing party with you friends you’ll get to cap it off with a round robin competition. Good-spirited competition is the linchpin of any solid friend group, and there’s nothing more fun on a wintery Hamilton evening that challenging friends to see who can throw an axe the closest to a target.

Workout Alternative

Skip arm day. Because BATL offers a public walk-in schedule on the weekend, you can get your upper body workout in a way that’s more fun than sitting on a machine. You don’t have to be physically fit to be good at axe throwing, but it does help build abs. So you can build your six-pack and then go crush a six-pack, all in an evening’s work

In the end, axe throwing may not come in handy all that often, (unless you get stranded on a desert island or something), but for a winter activity in Hamilton, it’s hard to beat. And it’s also a great idea if you’re the one organizing this year’s work holiday party, since throwing axes is a surprisingly effective team building exercise!
