6 Key Management Tips for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

6 Key Management Tips for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a brain-based, genetic condition that is characterized by behavioral symptoms such as impulsiveness, hyperactivity and inattentiveness. Symptoms of ADHD tend to be noticed at a very early age and may become more apparent when the circumstances of the child change, for example, when they start school. Here are some facts that you should know about ADHD.

Build support

If you suffer from ADHD, you must get someone that you can consult whenever you have a problem. You should get a person who has knowledge on ADD and has handled lots of patients with this condition. With an experienced and knowledgeable individual, you can get the help that you need for your child. You can look for a social worker, pediatrician, school psychologist, teacher, child psychiatrist or learning specialist.

Create a structure

Kids with ADD need external structure. This is crucial because these children may be unable to internally structure some things for themselves. Most children will benefit from a list or table that they can refer to whenever they forget what they were doing. A good structure will act as a preview, reminder and repetition whenever your child needs help.

Your schedule should be predictable

Kids with ADD/ADHD go through so many failures in their lives. Therefore, they need positive handling. These kids love praises, encouragement and positive words. This is because it helps them feel proud of their achievements. Without praises, ADD patients will lose confidence because this condition affects their self-esteem.

Be cautious of overstimulation

ADD can easily boil over like a pot that is on fire. Therefore, you should reduce the heat as fast as possible. The best way to deal with chaos is to prevent its occurrence in the first place. Kids can be quite a challenge to handle when they are over stimulated.

Offer feedback

It is crucial for you to frequently provide feedback to your child. This is because it helps to keep the victim on the right track. You should talk to your child and let him/her know what you expect of them. You should also be encouraging your child, especially when he/she meets the set goals or exceeds expectations. Make sure that you notice all the positive steps, irrespective of how small they are, and inform your child.
When handling children with ADHD, you should break down their tasks into smaller ones. This is because big tasks can be overwhelming to your baby and will make them shut down emotionally. You do not want your child to think that they will never do a certain task. When the tasks are manageable, every job will look easy and this will prove to the child that they can do the work perfectly.
