Ahoy Fleet Week Celebrates Memorial Day Weekend

Hey there, sailor! Fleet Week honors the members of the United States Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps. Here are some events to keep you in the spirit.

Saturday, May 26, 2018

General Public Ship Tours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Pier 90 in Manhattan; Brooklyn Cruise Terminal (in the Red Hook Community) in Brooklyn; and Homeport Pier in Staten Island. Ship tours will be held on Pier 90; Brooklyn Cruise Terminal; and Homeport Pier. Notice to guests, electronic smoking devices are prohibited. Additionally, all guests over the age of 18 will be required to show a valid photo I.D. Events are free and open to the public.

General Public Ship Tours (Pier 86) 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Pier 86 (Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum) in Manhattan. Ship tours (U.S. Coast Guard only) will be held on Pier 86. Notice to guests, electronic smoking devices are prohibited. Additionally, all guests over the age of 18 will be required to show a valid photo I.D. Events are free and open to the public.

Navy Dive Tank in Times Square 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Military Island, Times Square (43-44 St. Plaza). U.S. Navy divers will dive in the Navy Dive Tank right in Times Square throughout the day. Come by and play tic-tac-toe, see their gear, take photos and learn about the U.S. Navy. Event is free and open to the public.

Navy Aviation – Eisenhower Park 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Eisenhower Park, East Meadow The U.S. Navy will host an aviation event at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, NY. Navy Band Northeast’s “Brass Band” will also perform. Event is free and open to the public.

U.S. Coast Guard Silent Drill Team Performance 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. USS Arlington (LPD 24), Pier 90, Manhattan. The U.S. Coast Guard Silent Drill Team will perform aboard USS Arlington (LPD 24) at Pier 90 in Manhattan. Event is free and open to the public.

Navy Band Concert 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Military Island, Times Square (43-44 St. Plaza). Navy Band Northeast’s “Rhode Island Sound” will perform a concert at Military Island in Times Square. Event is free and open to the public.

U.S. Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment Performance 8 p.m. – 9 p.m. Times Square (Father Duffy Square, 7th Ave & W 47th St.) The U.S. Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment will perform in Times Square (Father Duffy Square) for the general public in front of the TKTS red steps. Event is free and open to the public.

Freedom Run 8 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. North Cove Marina to 9/11 Memorial Plaza. The annual Fleet Week Freedom Run is a 1.7 mile fun run through financial district and culminating at the 9/11 Memorial Plaza. The U.S. Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment will also perform following the run. Events is free and open to the public to view.

Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Day Observance 10 a.m. – noon Manhattan, New York (Riverside Dr. & 89th St.). Annual Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony will take place at Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in Manhattan. Event is free and open to the public.

Intrepid Memorial Day Commemoration 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Manhattan, New York (12th Ave. & 46th St. Pier 86N). Honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice serving in the armed forces. Join hundreds of veterans, representing wars and conflicts from WWII to the present. Event is free and open to the public. Visit the Intrepid Museum website for more details here

U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue Demonstration 2 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Pier 86, Manhattan. U.S. Coast Guard will conduct a Search and Rescue demonstration in the vicinity of the water off of Pier 86 for visitors to see. Event is free and open to the public.

Suzanna, co-owns and publishes the newspaper Times Square Chronicles or T2C. At one point a working actress, she has performed in numerous productions in film, TV, cabaret and theatre. She has performed at The New Orleans Jazz festival, The United Nations and Carnegie Hall. Currently she has a screenplay in the works, which she developed with her mentor and friend the late Arthur Herzog.
