Alternative Medicines: 5 Reasons Patients are Fighting to Obtain their Medical Marijuana cards for Pain Management

Pain tells you that something is wrong. So, pain can be your friend. Chronic and debilitating pain, however, costs patients millions in treatment, not to mention a reasonable quality of life.

Chronic pain may or may not be related to inflammation, disease, or injury. It can be real even if determined to be psychosomatic in origin.

But, millions are finding relief in medical marijuana.

5 Reasons Patients are Fighting to Obtain their Medical Marijuana cards for Pain Management:

The cannabis plant holds over 113 identified cannabinoids. The most prominent of them interact with the human endocannabinoid system (ECS). They work with the system’s receptors to restore balance to the messaging along the chain of neurotransmitters.

  1. Research says: A study published in Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management, in light of the expansion of pain issues in an gaining population, concluded, “Given their multi-modality effects upon various nociceptive pathways, their adjunctive side benefits, the efficacy and safety profiles to date of specific preparations in advanced clinical trials, and the complementary mechanisms and advantages of their combination with opioid therapy, the future for cannabinoid therapeutics appears very bright, indeed.”
  2. Users say: Ninety-seven percent of the people interviewed in another study felt that they were able to reduce the number of opiates they were consuming. Eight-one percent felt that cannabis alone was more effective than taking opioids.
  3. Doctors say: A study published the Canadian Medical Association Journal administered different levels of THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) to participants suffering chronic back pain, and concluded, “We’ve shown again that cannabis is analgesic… Clearly, it has medical value.”
  4. Authorities say: Canada’s government has authorized the use of medical marijuana through its Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR). Treatment is easily and discreetly secured at https://aleafiainc.com/patients/.

In the U.S., 29 states and the District of Columbia permit the growth, sale, and possession of marijuana for medical use. Some jurisdictions name the medical conditions eligible for treatment, and pain management sits on every list. In most jurisdictions, users must comply by presenting a medical marijuana identification card, but the requirements vary from place to place.

  1. Pharmacists say: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) explain that traditional pain management medications have blocked the chemicals that signal your brain that you are injured. Over-the-counter products like NSAIDs and Ibuprofen work to block those signals. And, opioids have proven very effective at relieving the pain.

Dosage of OTC medications is controlled to reduce their side effects. Opioids are addictive to the point of fatality. But, people do not die from marijuana use. The bio-chemical mechanism by which marijuana relieves pain are not yet fully known. But, as NASEM reports, that THC and CBD (cannabidiol) interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system which doctors believe “play as role in pain control.”

A final point without pain

Medical marijuana comes in many forms. You don’t have to smoke it. It comes as lozenges, gels, edibles, oils, topicals, and more to ease administration for the patients who are elderly, incapacitated, and/or non-smokers.

Medical marijuana comes cheaper than opioids, and it is being used to wean the addicted off their opioid dependence. Where permitted, patients or caregivers can even raise their own for marijuana for medical use. Medical marijuana will be easily available for those who need it doing away with the need to fight to obtain their medical marijuana cards for pain management.
