This Sunday, February 19th, Russell Simmons is hosting a large demonstration in Times Square from 12-4. The NYPD and the organizers expect this protest to be peaceful and organized. Over 10,000 are expected with the favorable weather conditions. Additionally, the Mayor, other elected officials, Rabbi Marc Schneier, president of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding and Imam Shamsi Ali of the Jamaica Muslim Center plan to attend, so if you are seeing a show expect major delays. The plan is for a stage to be erected at 48th Street and Broadway with speakers on each block up to 54th Street. The name of the protest is called “I Am A Muslim Too,” based on Michael Moore’s speech.
“Everyone except white privileged males are in immediate danger. African Americans, women, Latinos, Asians and LGBTQ are all at risk, but there is no freedom in that privileged status either because the spirit of the oppressor is oppressed as well. We are living in a time when unity will make America great. This is a special moment for all Americans of good will to band together to promote the kind of compassion and equality for others that we want for ourselves,” stated the Def Jam co-founder.
Simmons officially endorsed the second Muslim Jewish Conference in 2011 and served as the official patron of the conference held in July 2011 in Kiev, Ukraine. He also took part in the Occupy Wall Street protests, visiting the protesters at Zuccotti Park often and for many consecutive days.
