Maintaining your family’s health starts at home. There are multiple ways you can improve your home maintenance routine – you might be asking yourself what you can do at home at home to ensure you family maintain their good health, such as how much does it cost to tank a basement.

The summer months provide the perfect opportunity to clean all your appliances in the kitchen, as well as a thorough clean of your oven, toaster and microwave. Over time, bacteria will build up inside of these and may produce harmful substances that could cause food poisoning if left uncleaned. Indoor mould has multiple health effects including the development of a cough, skin and eye irritation and asthma, which can be especially dangerous for the elderly.

If you haven’t already, you should invest in insulation. In the winter, heat is lost through the roof, walls, floor and windows and ways to reduce heat loss is easy. Swap your wooden floor for carpet and add curtains or draught excluders to help maintain the heat. Laying loft insulation can save up to half of the heat escaping your home and save you more than £100 a year. It guarantees your home to be warm in the winter, and remain cool in the summer – just how you want it. Not only will this improve comfort, but also avoid the growth of toxic black mould or wood rotting fungi. Wood rotting fungi is a constant threat to the health of your family. Although the dry rot spores are not a health risk themselves, excessive moisture is bad for you and your family’s health. Unnecessary moisture can inflame airways and cause congestion and irritation. If left unattended, this is prone to increase the risk of developing depression and damaging the respiratory system.

Maintain the standard of your home by installing a smoke alarm on every floor, and if you house is big enough, near the entrance to each bedroom too. Each smoke alarm should be tested on a monthly and the batteries should be changed each year to ensure they remain in good order. Similarly, every home should have a carbon monoxide alarm. Carbon dioxide is an undetectable gas and can be caused by exhaust fumes produced by a number of household appliances. Inhaling carbon monoxide can cause multiple health issues if the gas is breathed in such as nausea and stomach pain.
