How Does the Outside World Impact Co-Occurring Disorders?

How Does the Outside World Impact Co-Occurring Disorders?

In 1979, Woody and Blaine released one of their literature which described the close relationship between depression like mental health disorders and substance abuse issues among those who are going through recovery. A lot of recovering addicts experience mood disorders and other psychological problems due to abstinence from the substance that they are addicted to.

How does the outside world affect recovery?

To have a better understanding of the impact of the outside world on recovery, let’s review a couple of cases as below:

  • Terry is just back from his stay at a rehab facility. The thought of finally leaving the rehab and going back home excited him. However, it did not turn out as he had hoped. He felt lonely and depressed. With no friend, no family and no job to return to, Terry started wondering what was the point of sobriety, after all. He found little to no motivation to stay sober.
  • Jonathan sees a therapist to deal with his depression and anxiety disorder. Once his co-workers learnt about his struggle with mental health, they started to pull away. Family members seemed supportive at first, but they stopped inviting Jonathan for outings and gatherings after a while. The therapist advised him to develop a strong social support network as an important aspect of his treatment, but how is he supposed to do that if no one wants to be around a former addict with mental health issues?

When it comes to dealing with mental health issues, most of the time the treatment centers around the internal issues that the individual struggles with daily. Due to the assumption that finding out the root cause of the issues and clearing them may ultimately cure the psychological problems, therapists fail to deal with those external factors. Let’s further discuss the right approach with suggestions made by experts.

What to address?

It is a fact that those who are struggling with co-occurring disorders are often lonely or rather isolated. It may have been their stressful social situations that dragged them into substance abuse. So, it is essential for the therapist to address the psychosocial issues at the first point to make the treatment effective.

The need for a collaborative approach

Researchers who have evaluated these issues conclude that the distinct approach of clinical treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation process for the sufferers with mental health issues now creates a system which is fragmented, and it lets the recovering individuals to easily fall through the net. The actual need here is for a greater collaboration of the clinical and psychosocial support services. Psychiatrists should increasingly refer the patients to community health programs.

Considering the current world social situations, there is a need to propose such clinical initiatives with regard to the co-occurring disorders which are tied closely to the circumstances of the substance abuse treatment modalities. Along with it, it is also important that a fine portion of the research be dedicated to clarify the effectiveness of the interventions, which demand greater resources in order to initiate a cogent argument for changes in the resource allotments.

Once this shift is rightly focused, it will become easier to create a more inviting world for those who suffer from the co-occurring disorders so that they can live a happy life.
