How to Organize Your Self-Storage Unit Like a Pro

How to Organize Your Self-Storage Unit Like a Pro

There are so many reasons as to why you might want to rent out a self-storage unit.  There are also lots of tips and tricks that you can use so as to pack up your self-storage unit like a pro and maximize the space.

  • Use pallets

It is essential that you keep your belongings off the ground. This is to keep them safe from any liquids that might leak from other rooms or from outside the room into your storage unit. If your stuff is on the ground, chances are that your things will get soaked up and start growing mold. You can prevent this from happening by using pallets.

  • Wrap up

Wrap up your stuff. Wrap up each item separately to prevent it from collecting dust over time. Wrapping up things also protects them from insect bites and damage. This ensures that your things stay in pristine condition for as long as possible.

  • Label everything

You might know where everything is when you are packing it up, but after six months, it is quite likely that you will have forgotten. That is why you should label everything.

Consider writing a list of everything that you have stored in the unit and then hanging this list behind the door. Make sure to state where in the room everything has been stored. For instance, you can say, the brooms are in the center of the room, bottom box. This will make it so much easier for you when you want to find stuff.

  • Lock up

When renting a unit, let’s say from a place like,it is essential that you use your own sturdy lock to lock up. As much as the area is under security surveillance, you do not know if someone might slip into the premises and try to break in. Therefore, having an extra lock will keep your things extra safe.

  • Stack up

It is advisable for you to box things up instead of storing them individually. When you box things up, then you can stack them up. This will help you maximize the space that you have. Just make sure that you label each and every box so that you know what is inside it.

As you stack the boxes, make sure that you do not stack them too high as you might have a problem accessing the boxes later on.

  • Use packaging materials

Packing up stuff in a storage unit is different from storing them in your house. Therefore, you need to use packaging materials. Remember to bring boxes, cardboards, bubble wrap and plastic sheets. This will help you wrap up everything well and keep it protected for long periods of time.

In addition, it is best that you do not wrap up stuff using newspapers. The ink can come off and get rubbed on your stuff.

  • Leave plenty of space

It is essential that you leave plenty of space around your packaged items so that you can easily access them. For instance, leave space in the middle of the room so that you can access the items at the back of the room easily.
