NYC Cup at Times Square 2017 Sport For Social Change

Street Soccer USA

Starting July 15th  at 9am, the Street Soccer USA NYC Cup in Times Square is the world’s premier Street Soccer event and a Sport For Social Change initiative wrapped into one. At the NYC Cup at Times Square 2017, nearly 100 youth and young adults from across Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Manhattan will compete in a Youth Showcase from 11am-3pm. SSUSA program participants currently experiencing homelessness will also have an opportunity to take the field at this one-of-a-kind event.

The benefits of team sports are known to reach far beyond the field, with well documented positive social, emotional and academic outcomes, but unfortunately such opportunities are economically and logistically out of reach for tens of thousands of youth in New York City neighborhoods and at its shelters, which house over 20,000 youth under the age of 18. Street Soccer USA offers free soccer, curriculum based instruction, and social service support to over 1,500 NYC residents. With support from the New York City Council, the Department of Homeless Services, ESPN Corporate Citizenship, UNIQLO, and event sponsors like the New York Cosmos, Street Soccer USA is scaling its programs and deepening its impact.

Not only will Street Soccer USA’s participants bring their skills to the NYC Cup at Times Square, but they will play on fields usually located in their communities. Basketball-court sized, transportable Street Soccer Stadiums from Red Hook and East New York will be installed by SSUSA in the Times Square Plazas on 43rd/44th Street for the event and returned the following day in time for SSUSA’s summer community programming to resume.

In addition to the Youth Showcase, New York City Council Members, led by Council Member Carlos Menchaca, will play a special match with program participants and former professional players from Spain’s Real Madrid and other teams. These retired players are representatives of AFE, the Spanish Soccer Players Union, a new partner of SSUSA. The AFE-SSUSA initiative will focus on on-field instruction and coach support through a unique training program set to launch in early 2018.

At 9am the kickoff, from 11am-3pm Youth Showcase Cup at 1:25pm On-field presentation begins, followed at 2:10pm NYC City Council Match, Special Presentation with AFE Celebrity Guests and from 3pm-10pm Street Soccer USA Open Cup competition. Mini 4v4 soccer stadiums erected across multiple plazas will be located at Times Square, 43rd/44th Street Plaza and 45th/46th Street Plaza

ESPN Corporate Citizenship which supports Street Soccer USA’s programs nationally, The New York Cosmos, UNIQLO, which outfits all competitors and Street Soccer USA’s program participants throughout the year, New York City Council and New York City Department of Homeless Services, You Are The Ref, a worldwide referee development organization working with Street Soccer USA to train youth and young adults in low-income communities to earn money as certified referees, HELP USA, New York based national social service provider and incubator of Street Soccer USA

Street Soccer USA is a national nonprofit that brings soccer to communities to help people of all ages and backgrounds discover their strengths and take positive steps forward in their lives. At SSUSA, we play for more – more opportunities for growth and more ways to win. For our players, winning is excelling academically, completing rehabilitation, applying for a job or graduating from high school. In just over ten years, Street Soccer USA has grown from a single team in Charlotte, North Carolina to a national network of 15,000 kids, teens and adults in 14 different cities. No matter the challenges our players face, SSUSA helps them discover their strengths and rise to new levels of success. To learn how you can Play for More, visit www.streetsoccerusacup.org
