New York Shakespeare Exchange (NYSX) has created an incredibly fun atmosphere with ShakesBEER, a pub crawl that provides exciting performances of scenes from Shakespeare and other notable works written in verse. The selected establishments are welcoming and the service is great.
The crawl moves through Hell’s Kitchen, starting at Jasper’s then moves to The Gaf, The Waylon and finishes at Perdition. It’s not your typical “look over here and watch” theatre – actors are placed throughout the room and as they enter the scene, they stand on the bar, on tables and chairs to be seen and heard. Often they walk among ShakesBEER goers and interact with them.
This strong group of actors perform scenes from Shakespeare’s Love’s Labors Lost and The Merchant of Venice, Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac and Aristophanes’ Lysistrata. As we go from scene to scene (and bar to bar) they get better and better – and the number of drinks we have has nothing to do with it (I promise). The actors use their physicality to give their words life. They create organic tableaux of emotion that are comedic and entertaining. Standing out among them are Clemmie Evans, Heaven Stephens, Kim Krane and Brandon Garegnani.
The experience is reasonably priced. One tickets includes 4 drinks, but doesn’t include tips for bartenders. ShakesBEER is an excellent way to kick off a Saturday night. #HUZZAH
