The Sad Reality of Being Pregnant and Addicted

The Sad Reality of Being Pregnant and Addicted

It is a phenomenon that for many years has not received the much needed attention. Alcohol and substance abuse among pregnant mothers has now become a great spark for controversy in legal and health circles. Policy makers and the legal profession are grappling with the question of what to do with mothers addicted during pregnancy.

For an addicted mother the situation is dire because addiction is a disease that does not care that they are carrying precious and delicate life in their womb. It only gets worse when you consider stigmatization by society and authorities which are only too quick to take legal measures. In fact, different states have witnessed attempts to criminalize substance abuse during pregnancy as if these mothers didn’t already have enough to worry about in their lives.

Prevalence of Substance Abuse during Pregnancy

Even as lawmakers and other busy bodies continue pontificating about how to treat mothers suffering from addition, the numbers tell a worrying story. A study from National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) published by NCBI shows that among pregnant women between 15 and 44 years, 3.4% use illicit drugs. The number of children affected by their parents’ use of illicit drugs, tobacco and alcohol has been increasing yet there is no clear policy on how to go forward on this grave issue.

The commonly abused drugs are also readily available and they range from marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine and alcohol. Others are opioids such as Codeine, Oxycontin, Percoset, and Duragesic among others.

It might not seem like addition during pregnancy is a big issue until you look at the number closely. In 2013, for instance, an average of 5.4% of pregnant women between 15and 44 years admitted they were using drugs while 2.3% were binge drinking. 4%in the surveyed group was using marijuana.

Consequences of Substance Abuse during Pregnancy

Whatever a pregnant mother is addicted to, the consequences are always detrimental to both mother and child. The drugs being abused can affect fetal and infant development, cause fetal death and stroke, bleeding, newborn jitteriness, still birth or premature births, fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and mental retardation among other issues.

While much of the attention goes to pregnant mothers who have already fallen foul of the law before in terms of drug use, many others go unnoticed. Many women who had not been prepared for pregnancy start using drugs to ease their nervousness and eventually become addicted.
