Understanding Different Types of Logo Design

Your logo can be a reflection of your business. It is a visual symbol that can instantly reveal your customers the essence of your brand. Nothing can be more immediate than your logo. The graphical representation can add feel to your business.

Though these logos are just a combination of images and typography, it is not as easy as it seems to choose the right logo which lures more customers. Many businesses utilize service for getting logo design but you always want to make sure that everything goes right. If you want to make the most out of your logo, then understand the different types of logo design mentioned below:

Words and letters

Lettermarks also termed as monogram logos can just use initials for brand-identification purposes. These lettermarks can be perfect representations of an organization.

A typography-based logo that is made only of a few letters is known as a lettermark, typically using just company’s initials. It focuses on simplicity. It is an effective means of representing what your brand is all about. HBO and IBM are two popular examples.

Since the focus is on initials, you need to carefully choose the font and its sizes. Make sure the words and letters are clearly legible when you print them on business cards.

Similar to lettermarks are wordmarks which are font-based logo focusing on the business name alone. Think about the logos of Coca-Cola and Google. The name itself is catchy which is further supplemented by the strong typography. Again, choose the font type and size carefully.

Pictures and symbols

A pictorial mark also known as brand mark or logo symbol is a graphic based design or an icon. The image will probably come to your mind when thinking about the brand. Few examples are the iconic Apple logo and the Twitter’s bird.

Since the image will be a reflection of your brand, it is essentially important to decide what the pictorial mark will be. You need to think about wider implications of the image you are going to choose.

Abstract logo marks

This is a further classification of pictorial logo. It is an abstract geometric form rather than a recognizable image. A famous example is Pepsi’s logo. Rather than being restricted to something specific, abstract logos allow you to be unique with your representation. Through form and color, you can grow emotion around your brand.

Combination marks

This is a combination of wordmark or lettermark and a pictorial mark or abstract mark. Pictures and text are combined together to create a unique image. Popular examples are Burger King and Lacoste. This option is a versatile form to choose since both text and pictures can be used to reflect your brand.

Emblem

This is the last type of logo which consists of a font inside a symbol, just like badges. These logos have a conventional appearance which can make a positive impact on your potential customers. The auto-industry has a lot of emblem logos. Consider Harley Davidson’s logo to get an idea.
