Blood pressure is a calculation of how hard the blood pushes against the wall of your arteries as it flows through the body. It can be calculated by using blood pressure monitors that are widely used by medical professionals all around the world.

The technological advances in the medical field means there are a different blood pressure monitors to choose from. There is an ever-increasing number of monitoring kits available to buy so let’s take a look what is there for us in the market these days:

  1. Automatic blood pressure monitors

These are the most common monitors in the market these days. Most people prefer using automatic monitor to track their blood pressure. These are also called digital and electronic monitors. These devices have microphones to detect blood pulsing in the artery. The cuffs are wrapped around upper arm which automatically inflates as soon as the button is pressed.

These types of blood pressure monitors are easily found in supermarkets, shopping malls and drugstores. Since, monitors used on wrist are not a reliable as those that are used as arm cuffs, the rate at which arm cuffs are sold is higher. Wrist monitors are usually used by those only who cannot use arm cuffs due to physical disabilities. Furthermore, devices using finger monitors are not recommendable.

  1. Manual blood pressure monitors

Manual monitors are like ones that are used mostly in doctor’s office. They usually consist of an arm bulb, a squeezing bulb to inflate the cuff, a microphone or stethoscope and a gauge to calculate blood pressure.

To measure blood pressure, the cuff if inflated around the upper arm. The halts the flow of blood in the artery for a short period of time. Then the stethoscope is placed on the skin over artery. As the air is released from the cuff, sound of blood as it starts flowing through the artery again can be heard. Blood pressure can be read on the gauge.

  1. Ambulatory pressure

Ambulatory blood pressure monitor is a device that one can wear throughout the day. It measures your blood pressure automatically. This is the least common device to calculate blood pressure. It is usually recommended by doctors if you have white-coat hypertension or if other methods doesn’t give satisfying results.

This type of blood pressure monitor is generally utilized if there is a huge difference between blood pressure readings at home and the reading in a doctor’s office. There is nothing to be prepared with this blood pressure monitoring. The monitor will automatically take the blood pressure while normal daily activities are done.
