There is perhaps no better way to see the world than cruising down the highway on four wheels, being able to decide where to go, when to go, and how long to stay. The only problem with taking a road trip is deciding where to go! There are road trips all around the world which will absolutely blow your mind. So, pack some road snacks and read on to learn about four road trips around the world you have to take.
1. Route 62, South Africa
We’ve all heard of the infamous Route 66 in the US. But did you know that South Africa has a route of its own that’s definitely worth cruising down on four wheels? Route 62, covering a distance of 748 kilometers, or about nine and a half hours of driving, is laced with 65 wineries along the way. That’s right, 65. Luckily, for whoever’s stuck driving during the wine pitstop days there are also plenty of non-boozy attractions, including faunas, cliffs, valleys, rivers, and plains. One must-do pitstop is the Warmwaterberg Spa, which includes Roman baths and hot mineral springs. To get the blood pumping before the next stretch of road, be sure to also check out the two-day famed Donkey Trail hike which passes through the Swartberg Mountains.
2. The Alcan Highway, Alaska and Canada
Stretching just over 2,000 kilometers, the Alcan Highway gives you a deep look into the great North American wilderness. If you’re well-equipped to brave the harsh snow conditions, then you will be rewarded with sites like snow-capped mountains, sparkling lakes, dog sleds, and wild animals like wolves, grizzly bears, and moose. Hiking detours are of course a must, and you’ll be able to intersperse these with some downtime in the many lakes and hot springs. Liard River Hot Springs, the second largest hot spring in the world, is a must-visit. 3. Transfargarsan Road, Romania
If you’re a fan of the famous novel, Dracula, then you’ve got to add Transfargarsan Road to your roadtrip bucket list. Complete with spooky, winding, dark tunnels (the longest being 800 meters), this roadtrip is sure to bring out the macabre thrill seeker in you. You’ll hit the highest peak in Romania, Moldoveanu, along the way. You’ll have a great opportunity to freak out your easily-spooked road trip buddies by taking them to climb the 1,400 steps of Poenari Castle. This castle is the former residence of Vlad III, who is, you guessed it, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s famous novel. Luckily, everyone will forget all about being spooked once they lay their eyes on Vidraru Lake and Balea Waterfall, just further up the road.
4. Milford Road, New Zealand
Whether you’re a JR Tolkien fan or not, Milford Road in New Zealand will take your breath away. Driving through the mountains of New Zealand’s South Island into the famous Fiordland National Park will provide you with some of the prettiest scenery on the entire planet. Waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and fern trees will have you constantly reminding yourself to keep your eyes on the road. The Avenue of the Disappearing Mountain is also a sight you have to check out that is unlike any other, as a strange phenomena of science causes the mountain to look smaller instead of bigger as you approach it.
Any of these four road trips will give you memories to last a lifetime, so happy traveling!
