A Tribute to Judith Leiber
Judith Leiber was the handbag designer of jeweled minaudières. Her whimsical designs often took on wonderful shapes such as a bunch of asparagus or a Hello Kitty head, say). Leiber famously presented First Ladies Barbara Bush and Hillary Clinton with bags in the form of their First Pets, Millie and Socks. Though amusing, they were anything but cute—they were expensive and collectible. Each one required weeks of handwork and thousands of crystals. A Holocaust survivor, the designer married her Brooklyn-born husband, the abstract painter Gerson Leiber.
On the passing of my fellow Hungarian, Judith Leiber, hours after her husband Gerson, I would like to share this video of an afternoon visiting them out in the Hampton’s and Judith giving a tour of her museum. I only got to meet her toward the end of her life. I talked to her in Hungarian but she always answered me in English.
