Among The Furies and Social Studies Split $3500 Prize At NYSummerfest 2017 Award Ceremony

64 plays and 22 shorts were selected to perform in the NYSummerfest 2017 Award ceremony this year. Each brought a unique story, perspective, and design that inspired and captivated its audiences. And each was required to enlist the bravery and inventiveness of live theatre that doesn’t rely on special effects, Hollywood stars and huge budgets. It’s been refreshing.

Tonight is a special night, with a night filled with several ties. 7 nominees competed for the Best Play or Musical Award of $3,500.

5 performers out of 320 were nominated for Best Actress, with the winner receiving $500. 5 out of 280 for Best Actor, with the winner also being awarded $500. 4 individuals out of 86 have been nominated for Best Director, with the winner receiving $500. 6 singers were nominated in the Best Singer category awarded $500, with additional prizes bestowed upon Most Creative Play or Musical $200, Best Stage Manager $200, Best Set Designer $200, Best Lighting design $200, Best Choreography $200 and Best Music Score $300. Three Short Plays were nominated in the best Short category with the best prize set to $300.

3-minute presentations from each play and actor nominee, 5 songs from the 5 singers were all presented before the winners were announced.

Best Lighting Designer: Zach Pizza from the musical Social Studies by Ryan Pifher and Jon Provan

Best Music Score: Jon Provan from the musical Social Studies by Ryan Pifher and Jon Provan

Best Singer: A tie of 4 –

Sam Brady, Edie Crowley and Ginger May from the musical Social Studies by Ryan Pifher and Jon Provan

and

Katie Hutch from the play A Word Of Love by Michael Gurevitch

Best Actor: Thomas Leverton from the play My Swollen Feet by Carrie Robbins

Best Actress: Claire Ganshert from the play Among The Furies

Best Director: A tie

Rachel Tuggle Whorton from the play My Other Job

Ryan Pifher from the musical Social Studies

Most Creative Play or Musical: A tie

Events

Suzanna, co-owns and publishes the newspaper Times Square Chronicles or T2C. At one point a working actress, she has performed in numerous productions in film, TV, cabaret, opera and theatre. She has performed at The New Orleans Jazz festival, The United Nations and Carnegie Hall. She has a screenplay and a TV show in the works, which she developed with her mentor and friend the late Arthur Herzog.
