Basic Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Home in Top Shape

Published

on

If you have plans for investing your savings into buying a house, it should be clear to you that aside from the financial obligations you also have to worry about other things. If you purchase a brand new home, you do not have to worry about spending money for a beam restoration project, plumbing, electrical and other common issues for the first few years. However, if you happen to be the second homeowner, you are expected to take care of the maintenance of the property.

As the owner, you should always do your best to ensure that your home remains in top shape to avoid more significant issues and additional spending in the future. If you are not a handyman or a jack of all trades by nature, the thought of taking charge of the maintenance of your house is quite overwhelming. There is a long list of things that await you. But on a positive note, you can solve many of these problems by just searching the internet. Here are some of the things that you should keep in mind to ensure that your house is in top shape all year round.

  1. HVAC maintenance should be done once a month

Your HVAC system is expected to work smoothly regardless of the temperature outdoors. That is why you should make it a point to replace its filters every month. If you have kids and indoor pets in your household, you should replace the filters more often to prevent allergic reactions and asthma attacks among your family members.

  • Check the kitchen sink and garbage disposal system

Food particles trapped in the disposal machine can cause the sink to have an unpleasant odour. You can avoid this from happening by pouring vinegar and dishwashing liquid into the disposal. Let it run for a couple of minutes until the smell disappears. It is recommended to do this once a week.

  • Check for bugs, rodents and termites

Some homeowners tend to ignore the presence of bugs, rats and other creatures inside their house. However, this should not be the case because you might be surprised to find out that your property is infested. You should also regularly check for termites to prevent your home from getting permanent damage. It would help to set an appointment with a pest control specialist every six months to make sure that your home is protected.

  • Schedule a deep cleaning session every quarter

Before the season is about to change, you should set aside one day to clean your entire home. If you are always busy with work, it can be very challenging to clean your place regularly. Take this opportunity to clean your appliances and furniture thoroughly. If you cannot do things all by yourself, you can call a team of professional home cleaners to help you out.

There are many things that you need to do to ensure that your home remains in top shape always. Make sure that everything is covered by creating a checklist.

Experts Can Help Revive Old Floors and Wooden Surfaces! Here’s How

Published

on

By

Many prefer wooden floors for their unique charm and warmth. However, with time, these wooden surfaces can become dull, lose their luster, and wear out, and this is when you need to look for proper restoration techniques that would bring life to the old wooden flooring.

We are about to share restoration tips that will revive your wooden flooring and bring back the beauty of the place.

  • Check the floor condition

Before you start the restoration project, you have to assess the condition of the old wooden floor. Look for signs like water damage, stains, wear, scratches, and holes. Note down all the areas that require repairing. You can also get help from the flooring contractor Tampa Florida, to determine the extent of damage and restore the place effectively.

  • Sanding and refining

In restoration, you must remove the old finishes, imperfections, and scratches through sanding. This would help to reveal the natural surface of the wood. You can use an orbital or drum sander to achieve a smooth finish on the wooden floor. These have fine-grit sandpapers that help with the smoothing process. However, it would help if you did not overdo sanding the place; otherwise, it can create uneven patches. After you are done, apply a fresh finish coat to enhance the color and protect the wooden floor.

  • Repairing damage

Over the years, the wooden floor has undergone different kinds of damage, including water stains and scratches. To get a uniform and polished appearance, you need to repair the imperfections, so if there is any scratch or gouge, fill it with a wood pillar or putty. You can use the sanding technique to smoothen the wooden surface. If there is a water stain, gently sand the affected area and apply the wood bleach to lighten the discoloration. If the damage is quite extensive, then you need to replace the rotten boards to protect the structural integrity of the place.

  • Staining and coloring

To achieve the natural beauty of the wooden floor, you have to apply stain, and on top of that, you have to put in a desired color tone. Go through the existing decor or architectural feature, and based on that, choose a stain that would complement the space. Always conduct a small test before applying that stain to ensure the product will meet your expectations. Use a brush or rag to apply this paint and wait for it to penetrate. Finally, a topcoat is applied to protect and seal the coat.

  • Preserve the character features

Wooden floors are popular due to their appealing elements, such as grain patterns, patina, or knots. You need to retain these character features when restoring old floors and not erase them.

Summing it up

After restoring the wooden floor, remember to maintain it routinely to ensure its long-lasting beauty. Sweep or vacuum dirt and debris daily and gently mop the damp area to keep the wooden floor free from stains. To prevent scratches, you can use protective felt pads under the furniture. Also, make it a habit to avoid walking with heels or shoes on this wood; otherwise, it can damage the wood.
