Carbon Monoxide Leak At St. Malachy’s Has Poisoned Two Dozen People

A stove ventilation motor malfunctioned at St. Malachy’s Church on 49th Street, between Broadway and Eighth Avenue, sending three people to a hospital with serious injuries. The carbon monoxide levels was so high 24 or more fell ill and passed out at the scene according to officials. 

St. Malachy’s is also known as the the actors church.

Everyone involved is expected to be OK, according to New York Fire Department officials.

The basement of the church is rented out by Encore Community Services, and serves seniors coming to St. Malachy’s for Meals on Wheels. The Meals on Wheels initiative typically feeds 200 people each day. 

A malfunctioning motor inside the stove ventilation hood is believed to be the cause of the illnesses. The stove is located in the basement of the building.

Authorities shut down part of 49th Street while they investigated the cause.
