Everything You Need to Know About Fireplaces – Kiln Dried Wood, Benefits of Fireplaces and More

Every home deserves to enjoy a log fire most especially during the autumn and winter seasons. A fireplace can instantly add charm and warmth inside a house. If you haven’t tried burning logs, you’re clearly missing out on a lot of wonderful things. Take note that you shouldn’t just use ordinary logs. You must use kiln dried logs. A lot of people who have embraced the log fire lifestyle will tell you that it’s worth it to give it a try as well.

Why is kiln log burning so effective?

Each log contains distinct levels of moisture. If a log contains high moisture, it doesn’t burn cleanly. It can cause your fireplace and chimney to tar. Moreover, they don’t provide as much heat compared to logs that contain little to zero moisture, and they take longer to light.

If you use kiln dried logs, you won’t need to worry about your home smelling smoky. Furnace dried wood will also prevent tar buildup on your chimney walls. Burning this type of wood will also warm up your house in no time.

Also, logs that have gone through a kiln drying process are free from crawlers. As such, you can store your dried logs inside your home.

How does kiln drying work?

To remove the excess moisture content inside the log, you can use the kiln drying process. It usually lasts 12 to 16 days, depending on the type of wood and the level of moisture present.

Some homeowners prefer to dry their firewood, such as the Norwegians. They cut the logs and place them inside the oven for weeks. If you don’t have the required oven or if you don’t fancy preparing the logs yourself, you can always resort to buying packed kiln logs instead.

Where and when should I use kiln dried logs?

You can use kiln logs any time you want to warm up the house. Most homeowners burn kiln dried wood during chilly days. As mentioned earlier, this type of log can provide maximum comfort when the snow starts falling. Alternatively, you can use the dried wood for cooking a sumptuous meal in the oven.

The charm of fireplaces

Wood burning fireplaces emit a soft and warm glow. Unlike gas or electric powered fireplaces, the wood burning type is eco-friendly. You can use it any time of the year. Moreover, if you burn wood, the warmth can last for many hours. In terms of cost, it’s far cheaper to build a wood burning fireplace as compared to a gas or electric fireplace.

Wood fireplaces also require minimal repair and maintenance. You will only need to scrub the chimney walls to remove tar, ash, and dust particles. Undeniably, fireplaces add a nice touch to any house. If you don’t have one, you can build one outside, or you can create a firepit instead. You can use it to entertain guests, especially during the coldest months of the year.

If you don’t have a fireplace, it’s high time for your build one. You only need a couple of things like bricks, fire stones and a few bags of cement.
