Frankie and Johnnie’s Steakhouse Gets New Home

Frankie and Johnnie’s Steakhouse Gets New Home

Frankie and Johnnie's

Don’t be sad Frankie and Johnnie’s Steakhouse on 45th Street may be closed on 45th Street, but the good news is they are moving to 46th Street the former home of B Smith’s. Look for a grand opening sometime in early 2016.

Frankie and Johnnie's

True this was where the landmark building started  as a speakeasy in 1926, where two waiters from Philly designed a front door with a peep hole. To enter one had to knock and state “Frankie” if the reply was “Johnnie” then you could drink with out the cops hauling you in. no police snooping around. Once booze became legal the place was converted the place into a steakhouse, where Broadway stars dined besides the mob. Al Jolson, Meyer Lanskey, John Barrymore, Bugsy Siegel and Mae West supped on Porterhouses and Filet Mignon. When I dined there, Tom Selleck was right next door to my table, as was Bernadette Peters.

The closing was known for some time as the Shubert Organization has long planned the massive lot to be demolished, so a massive high-rise can invade. I once worked at Sam’s, which was demolished just for that reason. The Shubert’s will use the building for office space as they wait for the rest of the block to go.

Frankie and Johnnie’s has two other locations. One is on W. 37th Street in the former townhouse of stage legend and former diner John Barrymore and one in Rye, NY.
