How Chiropractors are Helping Those with Back Problems

How Chiropractors are Helping Those with Back Problems

Many people experience back pain due to multiple causes including heavy lifting, injuries, aging, pregnancy or stress. When you suffer from back pain, your daily tasks are affected. Even simple things such as sitting or standing for extended periods, picking things up, or getting in and out of the car may seem difficult.

What is a chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a trained professional that underwent at least four years of training at a qualified institution. Chiropractors study about fundamental theories on chiropractic care inside the classroom. Later, they are then given actual hands-on training in clinics. Many of these professionals choose to have two or three years of residencies to help them specialize in specific areas. A chiropractor should have a license to practice their profession.

How can a chiropractor help?

Chiropractic methods are believed to bring relief to people with back pain. If your back pain persists for longer than a few days, consult a chiropractor for an evaluation. The chiropractor will determine the best treatment for your case. If you’re around the area, a chiropractor in North Bay may use any of the following treatment techniques in eliminating back pain.

  • Soft tissue therapy. This method is used for treating tight and sore muscles. The chiropractor will use various methods in relaxing the muscles including:
    • Trigger point therapy –is done by applying direct pressure on the most tense parts of the muscle.
    • Manual release therapy– is performed by applying pressure on the muscle to stretch it.
    • Instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy – is done with the help of a tool for applying gentle pressure and sweeping over the area to relax the muscles
  • Manual therapy. This technique is commonly used for patients complaining of joint problems. Manual therapy uses either joint mobilization, which is the slow stretching of the affected joint, or manipulation, which involves quick, gentle movement to stretch the joint.
  • Exercise therapy. For this technique, the chiropractor will give the patient simple exercises that can be done at home to help manage the pain and prevent it from recurring. They will also give the patient some techniques for maintaining good posture and information on safe lifting techniques. The chiropractor will provide other strategies that a patient can do to minimize the risk of re-injury.
  • Spinal manipulation. Modern chiropractic treatment is based on the understanding that spine misalignment causes back pain. With spinal manipulation, expect physical pulling and pushing as well as a strategic repositioning of the shoulders, head, back, neck and hips to help relieve back pain.

This technique is being used by more doctors and is recommended for ordinary back pain, which means the pain isn’t caused by an underlying problem like herniated disc or compression fractures. Spinal manipulation is used when back pain isn’t relieved with self-care.

How many treatments will you be given?

To correct back pain or other problem areas, you’ll probably need more than one treatment session. Most treatments last for several weeks. Initially, you’ll be subjected to 2-3 short sessions per week with each session lasting about ten to twenty minutes. Upon improvement of your condition, the treatment may be scheduled to once per week. Your chiropractor will discuss with you your improvements. He will talk to you about how effective the treatment is based on your improvements from the first session.

What conditions will chiropractic treatment address?

Chiropractic treatment is believed to be effective for the following problems:

  • Neck pain
  • Back pain that has lasted for three months or less
  • Chronic back pain

What conditions will not be treated with chiropractic care?

There are conditions where chiropractic treatment is not effective. These are the following:

  • Severe arthritis
  • Bone tumors or fractures
  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Severely pinched nerves

What’s next?

If you’re planning to include chiropractic treatment into your pain management strategy, here are some things you should do.

  • Ask your family, friends, and doctor for referrals. They may know someone they can recommend for excellent chiropractic care.
  • Check if your health insurance plan will cover chiropractic treatments. There are many programs that include this type of treatment, but you may have to obtain a referral from your primary care provider.
  • Ask your chosen chiropractor about their certification, training and their area of specialization.

Back paincan be a debilitating condition and many of your daily tasks will become more difficult to do. Choosing to ignore the pain just won’t make it go away and may even worsen it. In eliminating back pain, it’s important to know what causes it. A chiropractor will help assess your condition and should be able to recommend a suitable treatment plan.
