Check in with Someone

Try to avoid traveling alone at night to places you don’t know well. Before you go anywhere you should either have experience going there before, or have researched the area. For example, let’s say you want to check out a new city on your road trip at night. Before you leave your hotel you should know some basics about the area, such as which parts of town to avoid and where you can go for help if you need it. A little research can go a long way towards keeping you safe.

Finally, trust your gut. Sometimes our gut tells us something is wrong even if we can’t pinpoint what it is. In situations like this you should err on the side of caution and go with your instinct. For instance, if you call a cab at night and the driver doesn’t match the description of the profile on your Uber app, call for another car. At night you’re much better off being overly cautious rather than taking even a small risk.
