Do you remember the art toy lite brite, where kids created images with light? Well iLuminate, the dance show that has returned to New World Stages is like the scenes that were created in lite brite coming to life. Combining light technology with all forms of dance, iLuminate creates a magical theatrical experience that defies a theatrical genre. The story-line is a battle between light and dark, creativity vs. chaos, filled with an overwhelming overabundance of talent. The plot line is rather inept, with a man trying to find himself through art. The inspirational magical paintbrush has a on off switch that goes from creative to destructive. In the meantime, there is a romance that leads to several dance offs. The music goes from classical, to pop favorites, banger house, techno and EDM. The dance styles go from ballet, to hip hip, to club, to tango and everything in-between. When a jealous bully steals the paintbrush brush battle sequences, lead to a purgatory where a reptile cleverly dominates the stage. Animated robots, high flying antics, The physicality of iLuminate’s dancers is the other element of the Artists of Light that really wows. In addition to founding the company,
For those who don’t know iLuminate was created by Miral Kotb, a Columbia University grad who created the iLuminate software and its signature lightsuits. Besides being a technical genius she is also a dancer and the director. In other words this girl was blessed with talent genes.
Kotb and her crew of athletic percision dancers John “JRock” Nelson, Dario Mejia, Trevor “Clay Trey” Harrison, Robert Vail, Marcus Allan Cobb and Lisa “L-Boggie” Bauford are remarkable. With impressive visual tricks as well as outstanding choreography, this is a show for the entire family, however younger children may find this show a little on the scary side.
For a comic book adventure come to life iLuminate, is the show that will rock your world no matter what language you speak.
