Karliin Brooks The Squeeze and Her New Rockin Vegan Burger Bar

The Squeeze

If you have ever had a juice by “The Squeeze” or eaten a sprouted bagel with probiotic cashew cream cheese and caramelized onions from Westerly, then you know how fabulous Karlin Brooks can make food. Karlin is the goddess of creating healthy juices and food that are good for you without sacrificing the taste. This vegan temptress is now off on a new adventure, well actually two.

The first is the first of it’s kind a Vegan Burger Bar located at 108 MacDougal Street. I stopped by and had the Prima Juan’s Mexicana Burger ($11.95) – stacked with black beans and coconut “bacon”, avocados, cherry tomatoes, caramelized onion and chipotle aioli, along with a Raw Ginger Ale ($6.50) made with Alkaline Water, Ginger, Lemon, Agave & Aloe Vera. The burger came with my choice of sides and I choose Braised Brussel Sprouts. This meal was so filling and tasty I ended up taking half home and it was just as good hours later.

Other items we tried were the Nacho Kale Almonds ($ 5.25), the Strawberry Cheese Cake ($8.95) made with strawberries, unpasteurized coconut meat, cashews, dates, sprouted buckwheat, raw agave, pumpkin seeds, cold pressed coconut oil, cold pressed lemon juice, vanilla bean and Himalayan sea salt. I actually licked the container clean. The last item we tried was Coconut Truffles ($3.50). They come in a three pack and are so delicious, that you would swear they were going to pack on the pounds and they don’t. I am on a new kick of trying to share the things I love, so I shared the last one with my friend Maria, who is more in love with these than me, if that is at all possible.

Also on the menu are what as known as bowls. If there has been more room we would have tried, You’re Welcome Liver, a bowl packed with kale salad with hazelnut pesto, roasted beets, marinated cucumber crunch, avocados, beefsteak tomatoes and brussels sprouts all topped with “buttermilk” dressing or the Everything But The Bitchin’ Sink, a tri-color quinoa bowl with roasted beets, coconut bacon, crockpot chili, caramelized onion, cauliflower risotto, sweet potato fries and chipotle aioli.

Other items on the menu included The Hello Portobello Burger a mushroom burger with roasted beets, caramelized onion, and mushroom gravy. Diners can also build their own burgers and bowls. The location offers the brand’s full menu of cold-pressed juices and cleanses, as well. Try “What Makes a Coconut Shake,” for a strawberry milk shake without the guilt.

The Vegan Burger Bar is Karlin’s fourth location and is open from 7:30am to midnight during the week and from 8:30am to midnight on weekends. They can be reached by phone at 646-838-9200. The Squeeze products and all location/hours information is online at TheSqueezeJuice.com.

Karliin Brooks graduated from NYU with degrees in Broadcast Journalism and nutrition. Receiving her culinary arts training at The Natural Gourmet Institute.  She worked at ABC News, as a freelance producer and owns a Movie Location company for Hollywood productions looking to shoot in the Empire State. She is a former Model, a dedicated lifetime vegan and runs a distressed animal rescue operation. There are an assortment of cats and dogs at any given time. I should know she is my next door neighbor.

When I got really ill, I needed to cleanse my body and it was Karliin’s juices, “The Squeeze” that helped heal my body. They were so fresh, with no added ingredients that I was able to do a seven day cleanse and be happy while doing it.

Karliin is also an Eco warrior she has been on the forefront of the fight for the planet and has dedicated her life to the well being and health of everyone and everything in our wonderful but troubled world! No wonder her food is out of this world.

Suzanna, co-owns and publishes the newspaper Times Square Chronicles or T2C. At one point a working actress, she has performed in numerous productions in film, TV, cabaret, opera and theatre. She has performed at The New Orleans Jazz festival, The United Nations and Carnegie Hall. She has a screenplay and a TV show in the works, which she developed with her mentor and friend the late Arthur Herzog.
