The start of fall went off with a bang as Lizzo headlined Bustle’s 2019 Rule Breakers Festival.
The singing sensation captivated at the second annual event at LeFrak Center in Brooklyn alongside rock singer-songwriter Jesse Jo Stark, Moroccan-born, New York-based pop singer ABIR, and Australian singer-songwriter Betty Who.
The gorgeous day provided all the funky fun that Brooklyn has to offer including empowering outdoor yoga, drum lines, and skate dancing on the Michael Kors rink.
In addition to stand-out musical performances, the 2019 class of Rule Breakers, featured in Bustle’s September 2019 digital issue, shared their inspiring stories and advice with the sold-out crowd.
“One thing that has always guided me was a quote from Shakespeare, ‘To thine own self be true.” It’s easy to lose sight of that. But if you allow yourself the space to make mistakes and be imperfect and not judge yourself against someone else’s ideas of success, I promise you: you will find your way,” said Busy Philipps.
The 2019 Rule Breakers include best-selling author, actor, talk show host, and activist Busy Philipps; national voting rights leader Stacey Abrams; NCAA gymnastics champion and viral sensation Katelyn Ohashi & legendary UCLA gymnastics coach Valorie Kondos Field; and beauty industry innovator Charlotte Cho, as well as host, Heather McMahan.
Rule Breakers is a day-long, immersive experience celebrating women and non-binary performers, innovators and newsmakers who are breaking barriers and leaving their mark across a variety of fields including music, entertainment, culture, beauty, and politics. Attendees will have the opportunity to put on roller skates for a spin around the rink, enjoy delicious eats and engage with curated brand activations from sponsors Athleta, Michael Kors, RITAS, St. Ives, Visa, and the WNBA.
