Memorial Day Weekend is the kick off to summer. White is now the new color choice. Memorial Day is actually about honoring the men and women who have died while serving in our armed forces and the sacrifices made for the red, white and blue. Fleet Week overlaps with Memorial Day weekend as the parades and barbecues ensue.
The 31st annual Fleet Week in NYC takes place from Wednesday, May 22, to Tuesday, May 28. A range of New York venues host the weeklong itinerary including Central Park, New York Harbor, Fort Hamilton, South Street Seaport, Washington Square Park, Pier 88, Pier 86, Times Square and more. On Wednesday hundreds of Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen gather to fill Times Square’s iconic Red Steps for a photo to commemorate Fleet Week in the Big Apple. From sea service members local to the five boroughs to ones who will just be experiencing the City for the first time, the photo will serve to immortalize the camaraderie between the sea services, and the support shown them by New Yorkers and visitors alike.
Times Square will host an assortment of activity throughout the entirety of Fleet Week New York, with various military performances and opportunities for the general public to interact with service members through games and challenges.
