Remember those fantastic stereophonic vinyl records of Broadway Cast Albums of the Golden Age of Broadway? Before the needle wore out the grooves a bit, I would close my eyes as the waves of the melodic songs played by large orchestras and sung by magnificent voices filled my room. I tried to imagine what the musicians and performers looked like filling the recording studio and making such wonderful music. Well, watching Maestro Steven Reineke at the opening night concert of The New York Pops celebrating the music of Lerner and Loewe and hearing Laura Osnes sing “I Could Have Danced All Night” brought those old LP’s to life. The thrill of seeing how the music happens was on the stage of Carnegie Hall last night. You can’t hear those awesome sounds anywhere else. The Pops opening night concert was as much a celebration of Lerner & Loewe as it was of the music magnificence that 150 musicians and singers on stage can produce. Steven Reineke, The New York Pops, Laura Osnes, Nathan Gunn, Colin Donnell and Judith Clurman’s Essential Voices USA gave everyone a thrill at Carnegie Hall last night. I hope it was recorded!
One thing I didn’t get to see back then is how the performers celebrated after making such wonderful music. Here are photos of The New York Pops After Party.
