Oy, before “Jews Don’t Camp” at Birdland there was a problem finding seats for all the friends and soon to be friends trying to see this show. Jamie, even had to fight to find a seat after she started off the evening singing “There’s A Party Going On”. Actually she didn’t have time to rest as it turned out to be one of the most entertaining and exciting productions of the long running series that Jamie hosts. Recently Ms. deRoy has combined with the Actors Fund to have the proceeds from her Jamie deRoy & friends shows benefit the cabaret community.
Hysterical comedy was provided by Steven Scott & Julie Halston and thrilling singing by Hamilton’s Brandon Victor Dixon, Billy Stritch and Marilyn Maye. Julie Gold the singer/songwriter started off by reminding the audience that she “wasn’t a singer” but no one present will forget her rendition of her Grammy Winning song “From A Distance”. Happily by the time Jamie sang “Jews Don’t Camp” everyone fighting to get in had smiles on their faces and were giving a standing ovation to all the performers. There wasn’t even a “family feud” as Jamie made sure the Gruber (deRoy) family had great seats.
