My View: The Sound Of Laura Benanti Singing The Sounds Of Music In Her Cafe Carlyle Debut – Whoa!

My View: The Sound Of Laura Benanti Singing The Sounds Of Music In Her Cafe Carlyle Debut – Whoa!

I hope Laura and her husband Patrick have a video to show their daughter to remind her of the phenomenal debut they both made at Cafe Carlyle last night. Right at the outset, Five Time Tony nominee and Five month pregnant Laura announced to the opening night audience that they were both making their debut as she gently patted her tummy. The voice is one of the best on Broadway, and it was also one of the best voices ever heard in the intimate space of The Carlyle. The Tony Award Winner was everything you could hope for in a Cabaret performer. In her nightclub show titled “Tales from Soprano Isle” Laura uses her fantastic comedic talents and extraordinary musicianship to effortlessly and effectively slide from genre to genre. I always get a little tense when it’s a soprano taking the stage of a cabaret. Usually, out of their natural environment these fantastic voices can come off stiff and remind me of those funny shows by Victor Borge and an opera singer. Laura is anything but stiff, and if they create a Tony for a Broadway Star who also is a Cabaret Star it goes to Laura Benanti.

Excellent musical partner on this gig. Todd Almond, pianist and musical director supplied great vocal harmonies along with the tasteful bass of Brain Ellingson.

Mother and Daughter are appearing September 27-Oct 8
