Plumbing Pains – A Guide to Diagnosing Problematic Pipes

There’s nothing quite like owning your own home and having a safe, comfortable space for you and your family to live. Putting your own personal touch to the space makes it feel warm and welcoming but owning a home isn’t always easy. When things go wrong, they can do so quickly. It’s important that you learn how to recognise some of the most common problems that can occur in your home so that you can take action and get your home back to normal as quickly as possible.

When anything goes wrong in your home it can be frustrating and stressful but nothing is worse than when you have plumbing problems. Whether you are experiencing blocked drains in Melbourne, clogged toilets in Sydney or you have a burst pipe at your property in Perth, homeowners around the country should take action quickly to resolve plumbing issues in their home. If you fail to deal with the issues immediately, they can end up causing a lot more damage to your property in the long run.

Continue reading to learn how you can diagnose some of the most common plumbing issues homeowners in Australia face.

Blocked Pipes

Your drains are there to carry wastewater and anything that it might contain away from your home and into the sewer system. The amount of grease, oil, food, hair, and other unpleasant things that flow through your pipes can cause them to become blocked. Over time, some of this waste can accumulate in your pipes and prevent the waste being carried away from your home. If you don’t deal with the issue quickly, it can put pressure on your pipes and the results can be disastrous and expensive to fix.

However, with a few simple changes, homeowners can help to prevent some of these issues from ever occurring in the first place. Try adding a food sieve to your sink plugholes to stop food and debris from going through the pipes while still allowing water to flow freely into the drain. Also, avoid pouring grease being down the sink and instead wipe out your pots and pans with paper towels before washing them. Remember, prevention is better than cure, so be sure to do what you can to stop anything entering your pipes that could result in them becoming blocked over time.

Leaky Pipes

Pipes can leak for a number of different reasons and it’s important to solve the issue quickly as a small leak will develop into a much bigger problem if you don’t take action. One of the main reasons for leaky pipes is corrosion, which can be detected by a professional plumber when you have your pipes inspected each year. High water pressure, especially in areas where appliances connect, can also cause pipes to become overloaded and to, eventually, spring leaks. For example, the areas of your home where you have a water heater, a washing machine, or dishwasher are all common areas for pipes to leak as a result of the additional pressure that occurs in these areas.

Banging Pipes

If you hear a banging noise coming from your pipes you may have an issue with excessive water pressure in your pipes. Also referred to as water hammer, this banging usually happens when your taps are turned on and the additional water pressure causes loose piping to bang against the wall studs in your home. With your pipes moving inside the walls of your home, the pipes can become damaged, the joints can become loose and it’s only a matter of time before they start leaking or burst. To avoid this from happening and the expensive repairs that will follow, be sure to call a plumber who will be able to relieve some of the pressure and detect any leaks in your pipes to prevent any further damage to your property,

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

To ensure that your piping is efficient and is in proper working order, it’s important to carry out regular maintenance. Having a professional come out to your house and inspect the pipes for wear and tear can prevent some of these issues from ever occurring. Not only will this ensure that your plumbing continues to work efficiently but it will also save you a lot of money in expensive home repairs that could be necessary if you ignore the problem.
