Rags Parkland Sings Songs of the Future, Pass Over Take Best Musical & Play at 2019 Lortel Awards

The Lucille Lortel Awards recognize excellence in New York Off-Broadway theatre. The Awards are named for Lucille Lortel, an actress and theater producer, and have been awarded since 1986. They are produced by the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers by special arrangement with the Lucille Lortel Foundation, with additional support from the Theatre Development Fund.

This years ceremony, hosted by Drama Desk Award-nominated writer and performer of The New One, Mike Birbiglia was held this evening at held at the NYU Skirball Center.

Carmen Jones won for best revival and Best Lead Actress in a Musical Anika Noni Rose. Rags Parkland Sings Songs of the Future won Outstanding Musical. Pass Over took the honors for Outstanding Play with playwright Antoinette Nwandu providing insights on her personal struggles while righting the play. Outstanding Lead Actor in a play went to Juan Castano, Transfers. Outstanding Lead Actress in a play went to Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Marys Seacole. Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical went to Steven Skybell, Fiddler on The Roof in Yiddish. Steven did manage to finish his acceptance speech despite almost being drowned out by the wrap it up cue music. Outstanding Choreographer – Rick & Jeff Kuperman. Outstanding Director – Lee Sunday Evens, Dance Nation. Judith Light was on hand to present the Outstanding Body of Work Award which went to Telsey + Company. Enjoy some Red Carpet photos below.
