Rita/Gilda: Glamour and Tragedy of a Hollywood Legend Starts Filming

Bremedia Produktion GmbH is pleased to announce that in October 2019 filming will start on an international production recounting the eventful life of Hollywood legend Rita Hayworth. Authors Katja Runge and Henning van Lil set out on a journey to follow the footprints of the “Sex Goddess” in Los Angeles, New York and the jet setting world in Europe that she traveled in. They will be meeting stars such as Robert Wagner, Edward James Olmos, Diane Baker, Millie Perkins, France Nuyen, Constance Towers, Peter Ford and others from the golden era of Hollywood cinemas.

As the USA producer for Bremedia Produktion, Rita Hayworth’s last agent and longtime friend Budd Burton Moss will join the team. This will be the TRUE story and the most extensive documentary about the life of the legend Rita Hayworth and probably the last.”, said the Hollywood Insider.

Budd Burton Moss was representing Rita in the late 60’s and was cast by Warner Brothers president at the time, Edward Feldman, to replace Joan Crawford due to script problems, in the lead role of “Ll Bastardi” ( “The Bastard“) with Klaus Kinski. It was to be the last movie before the symptoms of her Alzheimer’s disease became present in a way that Rita could not recite texts in front of the camera without assistance. In 1980 she took ill and 1987 she succumbed to the consequences of the disease.

Former President Ronald Reagan wrote in a personal note about her death after a long struggle against the insidious disease: “Nancy and I are very sad about Rita’s death. She was a friend and we’ll miss her. H er courage and candour, and that of her family, were a great public service in bringing worldwide attention to a disease which we all hope will soon be cured.” Her story thus managed to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s in society. Her legacy is continued today as part of the annual “Rita Hayworth Gala,” which was launched by her daughter Princess Yasmin Aga Khan for the Alzheimer’s Association. She is one of the major supporters of the documentary on her mother and Hollywood icon Rita Hayworth.

Her life tells the story about an actress who has withstood the pressure of the film industry and show business throughout her life. Even if men – at that time even more than today – set the tone in the dream factory, she has always gone her own way. That’s why Rita Hayworth is not only a role model for actresses in Hollywood but also for young women around the world.

“Rita Hayworth to me was one of the greatest actresses and dancers of all time“, says legendary talk show host Larry King, who will be a part and huge supporter of this documentary.

The film is dedicated to her greatest moments: her iconic performance in “Gilda” in which her mere stripping off of a glove became a moment of pure eroticism. Her dance skills in duets with Fred Astaire who named her as his favorite dance partner. To the wedding with the Pakistani prince Aly Khan that made her the first princess of Hollywood.

At the same time we experience the struggles that she had to live through in her life: A violent father who dragged her to the stage at a young age for his own success. The dominance of her husbands which nevertheless could not hold her back from playing with an incomparable light-footedness in front of the camera. Rita Hayworth worked in a total of 61 films up until 1972 before she disappeared from the spotlight due to her Alzheimer’s disease.

The film will be broadcast for the first time in the second half of 2020 on the German- French cultural channel ARTE. The production is supported by the Nordmedia Film and Media Company Niedersachsen / Bremen.
