Simple Steps to Becoming a Vegetarian without Starving

Simple Steps to Becoming a Vegetarian without Starving

Are you considering the health benefits of becoming a vegetarian? Are you worried that you’re going to go hungry in the process?

Fortunately, there is no shortage of food options, but that leaves you with the perplexing question of where to begin. We are going to walk you through a few adjustments that can make a vegetarian diet easier to follow. Keep reading for more information!

Eliminate Meat Slowly

The best part about food and being a vegetarian is that there is not a hard rule that you must follow to become one. This means that you can set your own timeframe of when and how to eliminate meat products.

Depending on your current diet, you may choose to eliminate either beef, chicken, or pork first. Once you’ve eliminated it for one month, stop eating the next type of meat and so on.

If you are choosing to keep seafood in your diet, now is the time to begin incorporating more of it. Be sure that any seafood is responsibly sourced. You can do this by purchasing from a reputable vendor or even chartering a boat to go deep sea fishing yourself!

Substitute the Right Vegetables

Because you are eliminating various types of meat, you are getting rid of some key sources of nutrients. In order to remain healthy and full, you will need to choose your vegetables wisely.

To do this, consider which vegetables and other food items are high in the nutrients you need. Alfalfa sprouts are known to be a great source of protein, while spinach helps replace iron.

Healthy fats will also be needed, so look to extra virgin olive oil, avocado, and dairy. Overall, you will need to increase your consumption of leafy, green vegetables, nuts, and seeds, as well as complex carbs like sweet potatoes and quinoa.

Adapt Your Favorite Recipes

Sticking to any type of meal plan is almost impossible if you don’t enjoy it. While you will have to experiment with new foods, there are many that can stay the same with a little work.

If you love spaghetti and meatballs, you can keep the sauce, and instead choose to make ‘meatballs’ out of various ingredients likeflaxseed and tempeh.

Additionally, you can use tofu, Portobello mushrooms, and black beans to replace meat and serve as a protein source. Sometimes it can be hard to adapt your own recipes, cook times, and temperatures, so also consider a vegetarian cookbook.

Becoming a Vegetarian One Day at a Time

While there is nothing to rush you into becoming a vegetarian, you will certainly need to take certain steps over a period of time.

This lifestyle will take time and dedication to adjust to, but there are numerous health and environmental benefits to consider when it is done properly.
