You must know how to react, where to go, and what to do when faced with plumbing issues. If the plumbing ultimately fails, you must know how to stop the flood till a plumber comes and resolves the main issue. You must know where the main shut-off valve is located that is responsible for home water supply. Keep proper tools and flashlight handy. Learn how to quickly shut off the water supply to toilets, sinks, washing machines, and all water-using appliances such as the refrigerator’s icemaker. If any problem crops up in these, knowing where the shut-off valve is located could really save the day. You must know exactly where the main sewer valve is located. It is effective in providing access to rectify any clogged sewer line.

Know to Tackle Small Issues

It is important for you to learn ways of tackling small issues before contacting a plumber. You must acquire little knowledge and keep a few tools handy for handling petty plumbing emergencies. Keep a pipe wrench, sewer snake and a plunger in your plumbing tool kit for taking care of minor plumbing issues such as blocked toilets, clogged drains, dripping faucets, and stuck valves.

Winter Plumbing Issues

In frosty winter conditions, freezing pipes could be creating an unanticipated household emergency. Frozen water would be expanding leading to cracked pipes; once the area thaws, the cracks would be venting a flood. You could prevent frozen pipes by insulation. You must insulate all exposed pipes in the garage or in any crawl space. Before winter arrives, it is a good idea to remove all exterior hoses and remember to use insulating caps to all outdoor fixtures. If you have an automatic sprinkler system, you could easily clear standing water using compressed air.

You must spring into action when cold weather finally strikes. You must open all the cabinets beneath bathroom fixtures and sinks so that warmer household air would be preventing the pipes from freezing inside the cabinets. Keeping taps open to just a trickle would keep water flow constant and this may help you stay away from any frozen blockage.

If pipes really do freeze, there is no scope for panicking. Stay cool and take immediate steps. Shut off the complete water supply to your house. Consider opening a faucet close to the blocked spot for venting vapors from frozen water. If there is a possibility of frozen pipes in your hot water system, you must first of all, switch off the heater immediately. Then try warming up the frozen pipes using a hair dryer. Once the flow has been restored, you should carefully examine the entire plumbing and look for leaks and cracks.

Keep all the above-mentioned plumbing tips in the mind to avoid sudden plumbing emergencies. However, remember regular plumbing maintenance with the help of professionals is mandatory. Always call a professional plumbing company promptly to save unnecessary complications and major issues.
