Son Cubano Offers Views and a Menu That Will Enthrall



Tonight my guest and I went to Son Cubano located at Riverwalk Place, West New York, NJ. This is a quick bus or ferry ride just across the river and the trip is worth it. The views are spectacular and the food is out of this world.

Son Cubano originated in the Meatpacking District and was founded by the Duran family, Alexander (Mr. Duran) and Edward Duran, along with their two sisters, Claudia and Diane Duran, Gouchee, and brother-in-law, Kevin Gouchee. They also owned Flor de Sol, in 1996, a Spanish tapas restaurant on Greenwich Avenue in Tribeca, followed by the opening of Son Cubano in the year 2000. After a ten-year tenure in the Meatpacking District, Mr. Duran moved Son Cubano across the river, at the Port Imperial Riverfront, with the most breathtaking, unobstructed, pristine Manhattan skyline views from the Upper West Side to the Liberty Tower.

The team contracted celebrity Chef David Burke in 2020, to bring the brothers’ vision of a modern Cuban and Latin fusion menu to life. He is joined by Executive Chef Brian Morales, who learned the art of cooking by working through the trenches of New Jersey’s top restaurants. Before joining Son Cubano, he served as Sous chef at Peter Lorias’ Cafe Matisse and Executive Chef at Liberty Prime Steak. General Manager Doug Alexander is completing the all-star team, whose career spans more than 20 years, including time as Director of Operations at Joe and Lidia Bastianich Restaurant Group and the legendary Tavern on the Green by Warner LeRoy.

The interior is opulent, inspired by the supper clubs of Havana in the 1940s. The art deco design is has high ceilings adorned with crystal chandeliers lined by pale blue-gray banquets accented with silver palm trees and mirrors. A grand circular bar separates the Havana Room from the Vista Room, the main dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows with spectacular panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline. The room is decorated with flowing linen curtains that frame the windows, blue-gray dining chairs, a second bar, and a stage for live entertainment.

I started out with a Conejito Malo ($12) made with Captain Morgan Rum, Pimento Dram, Guava, Pineapple, Aromatic Bitters. It was the perfect start.

For appetizers we had the Homemade Guacamole ($19) with mango, jalapeno, taro root and plantain chips. This was so fresh and chunky, so your mouth was swirling with flavors.

The reason I agreed to review Son Cubano, was because of the chance to eat David Burke’s Clothesline Bacon ($27) 3 decadent pieces of bacon in a maple glaze, pickled pineapple and cracked black pepper. This dish is truly orgasmic and addicting. It was so much fun to watch my friend Jerry, who was not convinced when I ordered this, become just as hooked as I am on this sensual taste sensation. This is a must if you go to any restaurant David Burke is associated with.

For entree’s we had the Bone -In-Short-Rib ($48) served with roasted boniato, green beans and crispy shallots. This was done to perfection and was so flavorful and rich. If you like the taste of bone marrow, which I do, you will love this. The crispy shallots really added to the texture.

Jerry had the Churrasco Prime Skirt Steak ($52) with chimicharr, maduros and radish, which tasted like sublime onions. Besides being beautiful to look at, the meat melted in your mouth.

For dessert we split the DB’s Cheesecake Lolipop Tree ($19). The pop’s consisted of toffee crunch, cherry pistachio, chocolate tuxedo, with a mountain of cotton candy and bubble gum whipped cream. This is a kid’s delight. It is easily shared by 4 – 5 and is so much fun.

A cappuccino followed and it was the perfect ending to our night.

Son Cubano is a 10-minute ferry ride on the New York Waterway and just minutes from Hoboken and Jersey City by Light Rail.

If you are looking for the perfect Sunday brunch Son Cubano is launching an Afro-Cuban brunch coined Guajira Brunch Sundays. Starting February 4th, Son Cubano will feature live music from NYC’s #1 Cuban Band, Conjunto Guantanamo. The weekly event pays homage to the neighborhood’s Cuban roots and legends who lived there, such as Celia Cruz. 

For the memorable brunch experience, Son Cubano will offer a prix fixe menu for $35, where diners can select one entrée and two signature drinks. Alternatively, patrons can opt to select from Son Cubano’s extensive a la carte brunch menu as well.

Brunch highlights include, but are not limited to:

o   David Burke’s maple glazed Clothesline Bacon served with pickled pineapple

Conjunto Guantanamo will perform from 1 to 4 p.m. every Sunday on an ongoing basis (brunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).
