Summerstage Honors David Bowie with Grand Symphony

This weekend Summerstage honored a great legend with a grand performance in Central Park. Bowie Symphonic: Ensemble LPR performed David Bowie’s Blackstar led by Evan Ziporyn with highlighted work by great cello soloist Maya Beiser . Opening the night was a fun and fantastic show by the Donny McCaslin Group.

Rumsey Playfield was the delightful playground full of musical delight. The night was graciously provided by sponsorship of Capital One. The electrifying night left the audience moved and appreciative of the man who made the most of his beautiful time on the planet.

The star-studded orchestra arranged by the uber talented Evan Ziporyn with glorious cellist Maya Beiser had a riveting movement that saw the performance of the entire album in full. Ensemble LPR is an assemblage of New York’s finest musicians. The group personifies the venue’s commitment to aesthetic diversity and artistic excellence. This event is presented as part of the venue’s 10th anniversary season, LPR X.

The group made a stunning night with electric joy. The moon lit the audience that swayed the evening away. Thousands of attendees absorbed the sights and sounds fully.

The album full of such creative genius including “Lazarus,” I Can’t Give Everything Away,” and “Girl Loves Me” came as a final memorial to the legend. Bowie would have been proud of the presentation in Central Park on Saturday. It went beyond music – it was magic.

Summerstage is in partnership with City Parks Foundation. The group is dedicated to invigorating and transforming parks into dynamic, vibrant centers of urban life through sports, arts, community building and education programs for all New Yorkers. The group will offer an amazing variety of shows throughout the summer. For more information please visit
