Best Street Performers Taste of Times Square 2016 Presented By Hard Rock Cafe

Baby Soda Jazz Band – Baby Soda is on the forefront of a new movement loosely known as street jazz; with an eclectic set of influences ranging from 30’s era swing, New Orleans jazz, and southern gospel. The ensemble doesn’t desire to recreate the past, rather they bring the concept and joy of the music to the present.Baby Soda is an adaptable and ever changing group made up of New York’s finest musicians; featuring trumpet, trombone, clarinet, banjo and the unique one string box bass. The band has performed at some of New York’s finest venues such as The Village Vanguard, Barbes, The Knitting Factory and the Jalopy Theater. In addition to their busy schedule of club dates, Baby Soda loves performing on the street and in the subway. This allows them to hone their skills and bring the music directly to the people. Both Pediatrics and Geriatrics agree, Baby Soda is the sure cure for the aches and pains of the modern world!

The Ebony Hillbillies – The Ebony Hillbillies are not only one of the last black string bands in America, they are the only string band based in NYC. Consisting of fiddle, banjo, washboard and bass fiddle, they have successfully created a following that has crossed over to audiences in pop, country, bluegrass, folk, jazz and beyond while maintaining their grassroots credibility. Their 19th century string band sound was popular in the 1920’s and 1930’s; and was a key element in the genesis of jazz and virtually everything after (blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, rock & roll, etc…). The Ebony Hillbillies’ own extant CDs, ‘Sabrina’s Holiday’, ‘EH Sessions Vol.1 & 2’, and ‘I Thought You Knew’ provide a great introduction to a largely forgotten cultural legacy.

Mariachi Citlalli – Mariachi Citlalli is an authentic mariachi band, based in New York, New York. Their mission is to provide their customers with excellent music and great customer service, all while helping you achieve what you have in mind. Their goal is to be able to deliver happiness with their music, to everybody!

Paul Mueller (Hammered Dulcimer) – Paul Mueller is the lead musician and song writer, producer, and audio engineer for the successful percussive driven group from New York City, Mecca Bodega. He’s led the group through amazing live performances at venues such as Lincoln Center, Woodstock, Celebrate Brooklyn Festival, Merkin Concert Hall, and tours of the US and Australia as well as the completion of eight internationally acclaimed CD recordings. Whether it’s the soundtrack for HBO’s Subway Stories, compositions for directors Jonathan Demme and Spike Lee, or PBS documentary scores, Paul’s truly original songs and unique playing style have been heard around the world. As a studio musician, he’s featured on over 40 CDs/DVDs including sessions with Public Enemy, Stephen Stills, Branford Marsalis, Bill Laswell and Mike Doughty. Paul’s new solo CD release is “Floating On Land” and has been heard nationwide on over 120 National Public Radio Stations.

Ricardo Greenaway – Ricardo Greenaway, a steel drummer from Brooklyn,  has been playing and teaching the steel drum for the past 26 years. He’s performed at Lincoln Center and the 2004 US Open, and has worked with local agencies like HAI, MUNY, and NYFA. Ricardo’s aim is to bring the vibrant sounds of the steel drum to the world at large.

Sean Grissom – “Cajun Cello®” – One might ask, “what do you call a Texas-born, classically-trained cellist who just happens to be one of the hottest street, and subway entertainers?” The answer is Sean Grissom and his stripped-down, homemade electric cello. When Sean steps into the spotlight, the audience can expect a memorable new entertainment experience.

An international attraction with his hit one-man show O’Cello, Sean has travelled and performed before enthusiastic crowds in Japan, Canada, and throughout Europe. A proud member of MUNY, he has been the emcee for the annual MUNY auditions and has hosted and performed in a holiday vaudeville show at Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Audiences love Sean’s superhot, jazzy style of country, swing, rock, and cajun sounds, all delivered in his offbeat, vaudeville manner. Sean has produced and released seven recordings.

StreetMule – Marc Mueller is an imaginative Music Under New York (MUNY) subway musician performing for the past 19 years with the highly acclaimed percussive group Mecca Bodega. Co-founded with his brother Paul, the group’s unique hypnotic sound has been heard throughout the subway system with over 2000 performances to date in a majority of the MUNY locations. The group has touched audiences nationally and internationally including showcases in prominent venues such as Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, Town Hall with Simon 7 (Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion), Merkin Concert Hall, Brooklyn Botanical Garden, and the Celebrate Brooklyn Summer Festival. Mecca Bodega has been featured in award winning films, soundtracks, TV programs, commercials, dance scores, NPR broadcasts of New Sounds on WNYC Radio, a PBS street performance documentary and has composed music for directors including Jonathan Demme for the HBO movie Subway Stories; as well as appearing in the film. Marc has also been performing solo for the last 3 years, expanding his polyrhythmic craft as ‘StreetMule’. He has just released his new solo recording: Talkin’ True Da Tube. As “one of the best subway performers of 2013” (The Gothamist), StreetMule harnesses the New York City’s vibrant energy in a tribal soundscape that features Australian didgeridoo, Peruvian cajon (rhythm box), African shakers and Indian bells with voice effects played all at once!

KNIVES OUT AGAIN — (Via Deadline) The next installment in the Knives Out series has its title. Writer/director Rian Johnson announced on social media this morning that the film will be called Wake Up Dead Man. It was also confirmed that the film would come out sometime in 2025 and that production would be under way soon with Daniel Craig returning to star.

Johnson returns as the writer and director of the series and will also produce the pic with his partner Ram Bergman. Plot details are unknown and as of now Craig is the only talent involved.

The most recent pic, Glass Onion, bowed in 2022 with Craig returning as world famous detective Benoit Blanc. The film premiered on Netflix after the streamer made a record setting $450 million deal for the two sequels with this being the third in the series.

SHORT TAKES — The trailer for Beverley Hills Cop 4 is out. Here it is:

Harold Faltermeyer

The theme for the movie sounds like a cheap re-working of “Alex F” an electronic instrumental track by German musician Harold Faltermeyer …

The Wallows

The Wallows, who I’ve never heard of, kicked off the Today Show Summer Concert series. When interviewed, each of them said they used to watch the show before they went to school. My, I wonder how that made the hosts feel? Even Carson Daly, who’s no kid either, must have batted an eye. Interesting band. Nothing special I saw, but good luck to them …

David Krumholtz

Stephanie Mills

Award winner Stephanie Mills will return to Broadway to play Hermes in the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown. Her first performance will be July 2, coinciding with the start dates of Maia Reficco and Yola. Mills takes over from Jon Jon Briones, who plays his final performance June 30. Mills originated the role of Dorothy in the first Broadway production of The Wiz in 1975. Her last appearance on Broadway was for a special concert in 1989 … The Washington Post will go full AI. Tracker

… A short Memorial Day-vacay in East Hampton was great. Checked out Sakura and was introduced to CBS’ Tracker with Justin Hartley. Smartly done and directed by Ken Olin from Thirtysomething. Impressed for sure …

Billy Joel

The Long Island Musical Hall of Fame abruptly canceled their June 7 event, honoring Billy Joel at Tilles Center.  Performers at the event were to be Run-DMC; Debbie Gibson; and Felix Cavaliere.  Joel said a family event would prevent him from attending …
