Technological Solutions That Can Help Combat Air Pollution in the Urban Setting

Air pollution is one of the leading causes of respiratory illnesses and cardiovascular diseases in the world. The mixing of chemicals in the air is the result of the current way of generating power, heating homes, producing food, manufacturing consumer goods, and powering transport. These pollution contributors are usually present in highly urbanised areas where industries and people are highly concentrated. The two most prevalent kinds of air pollution that afflict cities are smog and carbon emissions.

Nowadays, air pollution is being addressed as a serious and continuing threat to people, especially those who reside in the city. Initiatives have been devised and technologies used to invent solutions to make the air free of pollutants both in indoor and outdoor spaces.

Air cleaners

Air cleaners are used to remove contaminants in a room, to improve indoor air quality. Since humans spend much time in their houses, schools, offices, and other indoor spaces, they are more prone to airborne and infectious diseases as the air gets trapped and increases the number of particulates from the outside. The air that circulates inside becomes harmful due to lack of ventilation, which results in the contamination of indoor air.

These air cleaners, also called air filters, are in the form of portable or fixed devices that can help to achieve adequate airflow patterns. Through the exhaustion of filtered air going to the outside, this device can create a negative-pressure room. They come in many types, and the effectiveness varies interms of the airflow rates, the technology used, and the technical design. The most potent types found on the market are the High-Efficiency Particulate Air or HEPA air filters. The air cleaners with this label are known for efficiently capturing microscopic particles present in the air and preventing them from floating around the room.

Air purifiers

Air purification technologies are designed to remove dust and smoke from the air as well as allergenic substances like dust mites, animal dander, mould spores, and pollen. With the use of an air purifier, it can disable airborne microorganisms through the multilayer filter system that is usually composed of a pre-filter, carbon filter, antibacterial filter, and HEPA filter. The two main types of air purifiers are those that use mechanical filters than can separate particulates in the air, and the ones that use electrostatic methods to contain electrically charged particles. Air purifiers come in different forms that can be positioned indoors, outdoors, and even as wearable items.

Green air solution technologies

As the level of pollutants present in the air increases in cities due to diesel and petrol fumes, there is a need to devise green air solutions with the use of technology while maximising the natural materials to clean the air. One example is active living walls, which are a combination of living plants and airflow engineering technology that can produce cleaner air through natural processes. These walls are designed to prevent pollution in cities and may be installed anywhere.

The challenges that people face with climate change are tough to handle, like making the air cleaner and safer to breathe. But every little effort matters now to make the world a better place to live in.
