Teen Tooth Talk – Maintaining Proper Dental Care During Adolescence

There are many benefits to looking after your physical health. Improved wellbeing, increased lifespan and an overall positive sense of wellbeing are but some of them. And dental health is one aspect of your physical health that you shouldn’t overlook. Going to the dentist is expensive and pretty low on most people’s list of enjoyable activities. Yet it is imperative for overall wellbeing. But what if you are either an adolescent or living with teenagers and you’re not sure about the best approach to oral hygiene in this age bracket? Let’s talk about teen teeth and learn more about this topic.

Regular Check-Ups

The key to having good dental health as a teenager is to ensure that you get regular checkups at your East Bentleigh dental clinic. A dentist will examine your teeth, look for any issues and perform a deep clean at the same time. As a rule of thumb, you should have a dental check-up every six months, without fail. This means that your dentist can spot any problems as they emerge, rather than when it’s too late. Missing checkups can result in expensive work like crowns, root canals or extractions.

Brush and Floss

Dentists recommend that people brush twice a day, morning and night, and floss after every meal. Now teenagers are busy with school, sports, social activities and myriad other events in their life so you or your teen may not find time to floss after every meal. If this is the case try to floss when you brush your teeth twice a day. Swish some mouthwash around for good measure too, as this will help towards maintaining healthy teeth as well. This, aside from the dental checkups, is the single most important thing you can do to maintain great oral health.

Avoid Sugary Snacks and Drinks

Nothing rots teeth faster than lollies, chocolate, sweet drinks and other sugary snacks. If possible, avoid these or encourage your teen to avoid these in favour of some healthy snacks. Of course, life would be boring without a little indulgence now and then, but keep these types of food as the exception but not the rule. A little trick is to eat sweets soon after you’ve had your main meal as this is the best time to eat sugary treats as your mouth has already generated the acids that begin to break down food.

Use Fluoridated Toothpaste

Don’t let the conspiracy theories get to you or your teen. Fluoride is a great tooth decay preventative chemical. Ensure your toothpaste contains fluoride to prevent against damage to those precious teeth. This chemical works to harden tooth enamel – the protective coating on your teeth.

Protect Teeth During Sports

If you or your teen is active and plays sports consider getting them a professional mouthguard. This will guard their teeth in case of impact. Consider a mouthguard for sports such as football, soccer, basketball or other high impact sporting activities.

There are a few things you can do to ensure great dental hygiene in adolescents. Regular dental check-ups are a must – every six months, without fail. Brushing twice a day and flossing after each meal is recommended. Avoid those sugary snacks and sweets, and ensure that the household toothpaste contains fluoride. Finally, a mouthguard should be standard for any high impact sport.
