Producers Scott Sanders and Van Dean, president of Broadway Records, proudly announce that the hit Broadway musical, The Color Purple, today earned a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album. Jennifer Hudson and Cynthia Erivo are included among the nominees as principal soloists. This is Erivo’s first nomination.
The Broadway cast recording, featuring Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo, Grammy and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson, and Tony Award nominee Danielle Brooks, was released on February 12, 2016 and was produced by six-time Grammy Award winner Frank Filipetti, Stephen Bray, Scott Sanders, Van Dean, Roy Furman, Jhett Tolentino and Joan Raffe. John Doyle’s production of The Color Purple opened to rapturous reviews on December 10, 2015. The production went on to receive 2016 Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (Cynthia Erivo). The musical also received Tony nominations for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Danielle Brooks), and Best Direction of a Musical (John Doyle). The Color Purple also received the 2016 Drama League Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.
