Producers Scott Sanders and Van Dean, president of Broadway Records, proudly announce that the hit Broadway musical, The Color Purple, today earned a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album. Jennifer Hudson and Cynthia Erivo are included among the nominees as principal soloists. This is Erivo’s first nomination.

The Broadway cast recording, featuring Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo, Grammy and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson, and Tony Award nominee Danielle Brooks, was released on February 12, 2016 and was produced by six-time Grammy Award winner Frank Filipetti, Stephen Bray, Scott Sanders, Van Dean, Roy Furman, Jhett Tolentino and Joan Raffe. The album is currently available on Broadway Records, Amazon and iTunes.

John Doyle’s production of The Color Purple opened to rapturous reviews on December 10, 2015.  The production went on to receive 2016 Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (Cynthia Erivo). The musical also received Tony nominations for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Danielle Brooks), and Best Direction of a Musical (John Doyle).  The Color Purple also received the 2016 Drama League Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.

The Color Purple which is running through January 8, 2017 at Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre (242 West 45th street), currently stars Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo, the “incandescent new star” (New York Times), whose performance is “one of the best theater-going experiences you will ever have,” (NPR) and Grammy and Tony Award winner Jennifer Holliday.

 The company of The Color Purple also includes Carrie Compere, Jennie Harney, Kyle Scatliffe, Nathaniel Stampley, Phoenix Best, Dwayne Clark, Lawrence Clayton, Patrice Covington, J. Daughtry, Adrianna Hicks, Bre Jackson, Grasan Kingsberry, Kevin Mambo, Antoine L. Smith, Carla R. Stewart, Akron Watson, and Rema Webb.

Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel and the Warner Bros. / Amblin Entertainment motion picture, THE COLOR PURPLE is adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize and Tony award winner Marsha Norman, with music and lyrics by Grammy award winners Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
