MORE BOSCH — (Via Deadline) Expanding TV universes is the hottest trend right now. Bosch,  one of the  early adopters with Bosch: Legacy,  is forging ahead with two police dramas inspired by the work of bestselling author  Michael Connelly, which are in development at Amazon Studios.

The first, the Untitled J. Edgar project, follows Harry Bosch’s former partner, Detective Jerry Edgar, who is tapped for an undercover FBI mission in Little Haiti, Miami. In this glamorous city, he is forced to balance his new life with the gritty underbelly of the city, while being chased by his mysterious past.

Jamie Hector, who starred opposite Titus Welliver on the original Bosch series, is in talks to reprise his role in the offshoot, I hear.
The second drama, the Untitled Renee Ballard project, centers around a character that has not appeared on the two Bosch series to date: Detective Renee Ballard, who is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold case division. Beyond simply investigating unsolved crimes, Renee is dedicated to bringing credibility to the department and justice to the community. Having learned from retired ally and mentor Harry Bosch, Renee does things her way – solving cases in unconventional ways while navigating the politics of being a woman on the rise in the LAPD.

The original series was for Prime Video; spinoff Bosch: Legacy is for AVOD sibling Freevee; it hasn’t been determined yet what Amazon platform the new shows would be for.

While building franchises has been part of the fabric of TV for decades, with Dick Wolf as the main driver, Starz’s Power took that to the next level with a universe involving multiple offshoots ordered and produced at the same time. Yellowstone is arguably the most talked about universe on TV right now, built around the success of the flagship series.

Just yesterday, Showtime announced plans for Billions and Dexter universes with multiple spinoffs in development.

Bosch: Legacy received an early Season 2 renewal before its first episode even dropped. The series, from Fabel Entertainment, is executive produced by Connelly, Eric Overmyer, Tom Bernardo, Henrik Bastin, Pieter Jan Brugge and Welliver. Season 2 is slated to premiere this fall.

Bosch was Amazon’s first original drama series, and at seven seasons, the streamer’s longest-running original series by a wide margin. The series, based on Connelly’s bestselling books, starred Welliver in the title role.

Though I started viewing Bosch late-in-the-game, I think the show was one of the best streaming-shows yet. In fact, I’d put it right after The Shield with Michael Chicklis. I knew Welliver from TV’s Lost and though he was just great as the man-in-black, on this show he is nothing short of sensational. Terrifically well written and directed this became a fast favorite.

The first season of Bosch; Legacy was good, but several things changed, so the vibe was a bit different.

KEVIN DON’T GO — The media headlines were aghast Monday when word came down that Kevin Costner might be ending his role of Yellowstone, due to a heated discussion over shooting days. Apparently the network wanted more, and Kevin wanted way less. The network and creator Taylor Sheridan also issued news that they were prepping in the wings, of all people, Matthew McConaughey, for a spin-off series. Intriguingly, most people took that as Matthew was to be a replacement for Costner. Wrongo fur sure.
I’ve watched the show from the beginning and became as fixated on it as most of America; plus I’ve been a Costner fan for years. Clearly, he has his fans and his non-fans. Posters went crazy in issuing their own opinions. Mine, for the record, is that show has grown less and less interesting and Costner’s role has grown less and less too. One reader said that this last season had too many shots of cows … which reveals for sure a bit about their demo audience.
Roger Friedman’s Showbiz 411 column yesterday revealed yet another possible beyond-the-scenes look, wherein he stated that it was all about money and apparently Costner is not good with it. Take a read here: https://www.showbiz411.com/2023/02/08/kevin-costner-yellowstone-departure-because-they-hate-each-other-and-hes-impossible
I’m sure Sheridan is no day at the beach and my god, how many shows does he have, but still, Yellowstone is the mothership that made everything else possible and again made Costner a huge marquee name. My prediction is that all these media is a test to see what should really happen. Costner, like Larry Hgman, will be back.
In Hollywood, nothing succeeds like success.
SHORT TAKES — SIGHTINGS: Todd Rundgren bassist Kasim Sulton walking down Sixth Avenue Wednesday … WOR’s Tom Cuddy and PR-pasha David Salidor at Ruth’s Chris Steak eatery in midtown. Sadly this NYC-institution is closing their doors in April  … After 96 years, Hammacher Schlemmer has closed their outpost on 57th and Third. What a NY-landmark. Great memories for sure … Congratulations to photographer Henry Diltz on his Grammy Achievement Award. Last weekend, there were a slew of events celebrating Henry, from Rona Elliot’s LA-home to the Morrison Hotel Gallery. Cheers Henry.

Micky Dolenz and Henry Diltz

Here he is with Monkee-Micky Dolenz … With all the news about Michael Jackson’s catalog being sold for zillions, remember that he didn’t write all his hit songs, so all that cabbage will be split every which way … People always ask me the best sheets to read for what’s happening in media. Well, first would be my column (LOL!) but in all honesty it would be Deadline and then Roger Friedman’s Showbiz 411 – both unvarnished and usually right on the money. Deadline was started by the infamous Nikki Finke, then bought by Jeff Penske’s PMC Media and still retains much credibility. Friedman, on the other hand, started the column for Fox and now it’s his own banner. beautifully written and thought out, his track record is impeccable. Also there: Kent Kotal’s Forgotten Hits;

Richard Johnson

Richard Johnson in the New York Daily News; and yes, Bob Lefsetz’s weekly musings. Usually Bob’s way out there where the buses don’t run, but every once in a blue moon, he delivers a beautifully written column

March 6, HBO’s Perry Mason returns. Here’s the trailer for Season 2:

Burt Bacharach

As we go to press, towering songwriter Burt Bacharach has passed at 94. Dick Clark often talked about the soundtrack of our lives …

Painted From Memory

Bacharach wrote much of it. I loved most all of his work, but the album Painted From Memory (1998) he did with Elvis Costell0 -which is being beautifully reissued this month- was just outstanding. Even Bruce Springsteen on his brilliant Western Stars album kept referencing Bacharach as a major inspiration for that work and you could hear it in the production. For a great piece on Bacharach, read this from Showbiz 411:https://www.showbiz411.com/2023/02/09/rip-burt-bacharach-towering-composer-of-pop-classics-was-94-known-for-his-hits-and-his-swagger

We’ll have more on his passing. Just an amazing talent. RIP

Tony King

From our U.K. spy: Wonderful turnout for Tony King’s book launch in Soho last night organised by Mark Hart for the Walthamstow Rock & Roll Book Club. Elton John, Lulu, Charlie Watts’ daughter Serafina, James McCartney and others all showed up to pay homage to the legendary promo man who ended up working with so many greats (ex-Beatles, Stones, Elton, Ronettes etc) after his humble beginnings at Decca Records in 1958. Excellent Q&A hosted by Alexis Petridis in a great setting, big thanks to Tom Ferguson and good to see Paul Levett, Gary Crowley, Mark Baxter, Chris Charlesworth, Mark Lewisohn, Andy Neil, Tris Penna and many others there. Quite possibly the book launch of the year, check it out at The Tastemaker by Tony King published by Faber Books … Happy BDay Ivan Arguello and France Joli.

CARREY IS MISSING — When The Mask came out in 1994 and introduced us to Jim Carrey, we immediately knew he was an actor of extraordinary talent. Directed by the late Chuck Russell, it was just masterful in every way. It also introduced us to a new actress named Cameron Diaz.

To be honest, I began to think of him as the best comic-actor since Andy Kauffman and then he went onto to do Man On The Moon (directed by Milos Forman) about Kauffman. Again, just a superlative role for him and a great tale about the late-comic.

The Truman Show (directed by Peter Weir) showed audiences he had just a terrific range. Not only was it a tremendous story, but again just a terrific performance. Ed Harris wasn’t that bad either!

Dumb and Dumber and Liar, Liar were great, but then he did Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind which for me, proved once and for all, where he was headed. Carrey was a thinker and probably much more so than audiences thought. He paints, he draws … a true renaissance man.

But of late he’s gone silent and many say he’s departed acting for good. Sure, there’s a Grinch movie every so often, but I suspect that’s more for the huge payday, than the content.

Some personal travails have followed and probably given him even more reason for pause. The Telegraph in the U.K. ran an interesting piece the other day, which made me think about him and how much I miss him.

Come back Jim … soon!

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber

WEBBER VS. RICE — Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice first gained worldwide prominence with their stupendous Jesus Christ Superstar opera. in 1971 It was good, dammed good, but there was a constant rumor that side 2 was side 1 backwards. The opera had Ian Gillan as JC and Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene. There even was a movie in 1973; many stage productions and a pretty grand TV production several years back.

The fact remains that it’s a staggeringly good play with some terrific music. Webber and Rice would split years later but it was recently announced they’d re-group for a new work called Sherlock Homes and the 12 Days of Christmas. It would have been their first collaboration in 40 years.

Rice told the Times on Wednesday (October 21) that his former partner’s songs had been “ditched” after Lloyd Webber allegedly withdrew his score. Webber claims that Rice’s contract called for more than Webber wanted to give. It’s also note worthy that Rice’s children are producing the play.

Whatever the true reasons, this re-collaboration would have been monumental. The two have enjoyed success beyond their wildest dreams and unfortunately, with this latest development, the work they did collaborate on we won’t hear.

The play’s debut is set for late next month. Here’s more from Broadwayworld.com: https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Andrew-Lloyd-Webbers-Songs-Cut-From-Musical-Written-With-Tim-Rice-Ahead-Of-London-Run-20261022

SHORT TAKES — We just got the new Alice Cooper memoir Devil On My Shoulder (Da Capo) and it looks like a great read. In fact, with less than two years to go before LA28 kicks off on July 14, 2028 at both SoFi Stadium and the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, the former LucaFilm boss and now independent producer has to hit the ground running. As of today, multiple Oscar nominee Kennedy will take over Peter Rice’s old job as Head of Ceremonies and Content for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games … RIP Kenny McPherson

ONE MORE MAC ATTACK — I love Fleetwood Mac. They’ve been on the scene ever since I first gravitated to music. One show at the long-gone, much-missed Calderone Concert Hall in Hempstead, Long Island remains a major moment. Halfway through the show the power went out and they kept on playing. Just brilliant.

They’ve had a myriad of greatest hits albums; books from not only the members, but from the producers and engineers; photo arrays and now Apple+ has announced the first (really?) authorized bio-pic called The Chain – coming next year and directed by Frank Marshall no less.

“The Chain” is the only Fleetwood Mac song that all five are properly credited on. When The Mac jettisoned Lindsey Buckingham in 2018, they took a lot of heat and it does seem, with the re-release of the brilliant Buckingham- Nicks album, featuring the song “Frozen Love,” that some sort of final re-union is indeed in the works.

Heartbreaker-Mike Campbell was a solid replacement for Lindsey, but true-blue fans were still angered. For me, Buckingham lit a fire for the Mac which has never been equaled He’ll be back for sure.

Lindsey Buckingham

btw: My favorite Buckingham composition is “Make Me A Mask.” Check it out here:

Interestingly, the track is from a Mac-compilation called The Chain.

SHORT TAKES — 15 years since her passing, Amy Winehouse is still a powerhouse. Much missed for sure …. Fascinating Bernie Taupin interview with Rick Beato.

Bernie Taupin

Taupin reminds that the famous Liberty Records ad that he and Elton responded too, was also responded to by one Jeff Lynne. Also, when asked for the lyricists he most admires, he answers with Leonard Cohen and Mick Jagger. Wild for sure. btw: His new album The Sea Has No Mercy is pretty good and he does indeed sound like Cohen a bit. Would love to receive a review copy  but ShoreFire Media hasn’t green-lighted us. C.heck the Beato-interview here:

MEET ME AT REBOOT CITY — On Wednesday, re-boots of Coach; Glee and Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea were announced. I watched all of them and Voyage was a stone-cold classic. Actually to me, that’s the classiest re-boot of the bunch.

The sad fact is that originality and innovation has just gone out the door. The powers that be figure they’ll snare the audience that actually remembers the shows and just maybe, ever garner a new one.
Voyage was producer Irwin Allen’s  baby and he was responsible for a slew of sci-fi shows, including Lost In Space; Time Tunnel; Land of the Giants and Swiss Family Robinson.

Daisy Ridley

Voyage will topline Star Wars-star Daisy Ridley … sort of doing away with the characters David Hedison and Richard Baseheart portrayed on the TV show. It seems they’ve tweaked it a bit too, but the story was of the Seaview, the world’s first nuclear submarine. The shoe ran for 4 seasons and introduced The Flying Sub in the last.

It was a great show, as was Time Tunnel, here’s hoping.
Most re-boots fail; Frasier; The Odd Couple; Charlie’s Angels; Knight Rider; Dallas; Legacy; Ironside; The Love Boat: The Next Wave; Dynasty and The Bionic Woman.
And this just in via Deadline: Lea Michele, who shot to global stardom as Rachel Berry in Glee, has confirmed she’ll reprise the role in the upcoming Disney+/Hulu reboot.
SLOW HORSES FINALE — Let’s face it, Slow Horses Season 6 was totally … slow.

Jack Lowden

Jack Lowden running around in a black suit could have been the highlight. Then, Wednesday night came the season finale (Judgement Day), which reminded this writer of their very first season. It was just sensational. Yes, there were severe losses and Gary Oldman was his usual terrific self, but the final 20-minutes had a heart-to-heart talk between Lowden and his father Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving) which was grand and poignant and then a killer-ending which saw Lowden (aka River) possibly poisoned.

It just showed how good this show can be. Lowden delivered just a fiery performance all-season and to be candid, he’d be a great James Bond. To top it all off, there was a trailer for Season 7, which didn’t show Lowden at all. The show actually announced new cast members this week and they’re already filming Season 8.
I was hoping in the trailer they’d show finally show Oldman dressed in Saville Row finery, but it didn’t happen. I also want to mention that Kristin Scott Thomas and the MI6-head, whose character was embroiled in a scandalous off-the-books op all season, delivered a great, great performance and the scenes between her and Oldman were just great. Hopefully they’ll be more between these two.
Not a great season, but a killer (!!!) finale! Bravo!
SHORT TAKES — RIP Capricorn Records PR-man Mark Pucci. Read more here: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/music/music-news/mark-pucci-dead-music-publicist-blues-advocate-1236733643/

AMANPOUR EXITS CNN AFTER 43 YEARS — 43 years is a good run anywhere these days … right? CNN’sexemplary Christiane Amanpour, one of the earliest voices to ever emanate from the channel, is leaving after 43 years. She’ll still have a podcast on CNN, so she won’t be totally disappearing.

Bernard Shaw was the first chief anchor for CNN, helping launch the network on June 1, 1980, and serving in that role for two decades until his March 2001 retirement.
And who can ever forget James Earl Jones signature … this is CNN? 24-hour news … what an idea!
The stories she’s covered and her consistently good broadcasts will certainly be missed.
Here’s a fuller re-cap from Deadline: https://deadline.com/2026/10/christiane-amanpour-to-leave-cnn-1237167533/

FALL TV FORECAST — We’re well into the “new” TV season and I have to say, it’s been a bit lackluster. even my personal favorite Slow Horses (Apple) which suffered a showrunner change and turned the show into just another cops ‘n robber show. Gary Oldman is still phenomenal, but he’s in it far less now.

CBS’ Tracker, with the terrific Justin Hartley, has been noticed mostly about their switch from filming in Vancouver, Canada to sunny LA. In a way, it looks like a totally new show. The show is great, but it’s kind of the same plot each episode. Tracker looks for someone who’s gone missing.
Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) is phenomenal and, in a way, this season has turned into his breakout season. Their finale for season 6 is this week. He’d been tipped as the next James Bond and seeing him for most of this season in a black suit makes him a perfect choice. He’s got style for days.
Believe it or not, but NCIS with the return of Michael Weatherly, has been the highlight with a terrifically well written first episode and the energy ramped up like never before.

Mark Harmon

Mark Harmon, who was the star for 18 seasons, has returned as well and his presence is terrific. Looking noticeably older, he’s a welcomed addition.

I loved when CIA debuted last year with Tom Ellis and their second season hasn’t let me down yet. Ted Lasso was a bit of a letdown, though I loved Rooster with Steve Carell. And, I’m looking forward to the next season of Shrinking and MobLand and with Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Hellen Mirren is a joy.
SHORT TAKES — I cant quite fathom that OJ Simpson is back in the news. I well remember the day they announced the verdict – at The long-gone Mayflower Hotel in their Conservatory Bar – it was packed and a stone-cold silence greeted the verdict. Astonishing …

(ViaDeadline) Before social media even existed, Christie Brinkley was documenting her life through letters, journals and home movies. The star has opened up this trove for Uptown Girl: The Christie Brinkley Story, the upcoming doc series about her life. Brinkley has previously let some of the material be used in HBO doc Billy Joel: And So It Goes about her ex-husband Joel, but held plenty back for her own film. She asked the HBO filmmakers to send thumbnails of the footage they wanted and when she wanted to keep it back, the message to the producers was, ‘Nope, that’s for me.’ “These are films never before seen,” Brinkley told Deadline about the archive used in the new series, which is produced by Lionsgate Alternative Television. The doc was greenlit by streamer Fox Nation  and will bow in 2027. Over three parts it will take in Brinkley’s early years as an artist before fame, life on the road with Billy Joel, and marriage, motherhood and private heartbreak, as well as the helicopter crash that nearly claimed her life … Christopher Nolan’s thriller The Prestige will to return theaters on January 29, 2027, in celebration of the film’s 20th anniversary. Walt Disney Studios will re-release the film that stars Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson, and features the late David Bowie as physicist Nikola Tesla. The re-release will give audiences the chance to see the film on 70mm and IMAX for the first time, and it will also be presented in 35mm and Digital 2D formats … Happy BDay Raspin Stuwart!

SODERBERGH’S TURN AT BAT — (Via Deadline) As director Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing personal matter, Steven Soderbergh is coming on to help finish principal photography for the final weeks of DC Studios’ The Batman Part II. The news comes after production was paused on the film so that Reeves could focus on the personal matter.

Steven Soderbergh

Soderbergh has been longtime admirer of Reeves work, and with Reeves unable to be on set, the Oscar-winning director offered to help with finishing principal photography. The two will work together and remain in communication until filming has ended, with Reeves taking over post-production duties when he is ready to return.

“As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2. Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film.”

Soderbergh has long been a personal favorite (this year’s The Christophers is a stone-cold instant classic) of mine and his added tutelage here can only help. I loved what Reeves did on his first Bat-film and quite sure this second will be as good. No doubt at all.

5 EASY PIECES — We watched this 1970 classic over the weekend and aside from the fashion and hair-styles being somewhat dated, it held up miraculously well. Nicholson is just amazing once again as the disgruntled son Bobby Dupea and Karen Black and Susan Ansbach are just stellar, with Anspach just luminous.

The title Five Easy Pieces does not refer to five specific plot points or chapters, but rather alludes to beginner piano exercise pieces, reflecting main character Robert “Bobby” Dupea’s (Jack Nicholson) background as a former classical piano prodigy who abandoned his musical life. The title always confused me.

Bob Rafelson

Directed by Bob Rafelson (of Monkees-fame) his take is terrifically succinct and majestic. A classic for sure.

SHORT TAKES — Bob Lefsetz now has a podcast with Alissa Polack as one of his premiere guests. Bob’s great, but please don’t wear shorts. Does Felice let you wear them at home? …

Should Horse Carriage Drivers in NYC be banned? Hard call for sure, but if they’re eliminated, it’d be a huge blow to the NY-scenery. They’re talking about exploring automatic-carriage drivers, but what exactly does that mean? If you never been on one, it’s magical experience … (Via Deadline) The next season of True Detective is starting to take shape. Antonio Banderas has joined the cast of season five of the HBO anthology drama.

Nicolas Cage

This comes after Nicolas Cage confirmed that he was entering the universe at last week’s New York Comic-Con, more than a year after it was revealed that the Pig star was in talks. Production is set to start in 2027 for the show, which is being led by showrunner Issa López, who oversaw season four, Night Country … Musked? Interetsing and very disturbing artcile on the film Musk by Alex Gibney in The Washington Post.
