The Mayor of Times Square Interviews actress Sean Young on The Motivation Show Podcast
Sean Young was one of Hollywood’s leading actresses in the 1980’s. She starred in iconic movies like Blade Runner, No Way Out, Wall Street, Fatal Instinct and showed her comedic chops in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
She is now starring in the four act Play Ode to the Wasp Woman playing at the Actor’s Temple Theatre at 339 West 47 Street. Here are some excerpts from The Mayor of Times Square’s interview with Sean on The Motivation Show podcast:
Eli Marcus: When did you decide you actually wanted to be an actress and why?
Sean Young: I grew up primarily in Ohio, in Cleveland Heights, and we had this Black and White TV and after school they used to screen all the MGM musicals and I fell in love with Singin’ in the Rain and I had a massive crush on Gene Kelly like a lot of people. I became a bit of a retro movie buff. I even actually wrote to Gene Kelly and I have a signed autograph. I wanted to be the female version of Gene Kelly. That’s what started it. The number in Singin’ in the Rain called Moses Supposes, oh man, that used to blow my mind. Every time I saw it, I was just like…oh my god! And then I went to Interlochen Academy for my last two years in high school and then right after high school I came to New York City.
Eli Marcus: Why did you think you could make it in a profession where most people don’t? Is it self-confidence or something else that drove you?
Sean Young: I really don’t know the answer to that question. I do know that I have a lot of energy, at certain times quite bit of courage. You do need those two things. I’d probably be great in the army if I was wanting to be in the army, which I’m not.
Eli Marcus: What motivates you and drives you TODAY to continue to do what you do?
Sean Young: I’m not as motivated today because I love being at home and petting my cat and all of of that kind of thing. When my agent brought that to me it is pretty true that most actors like to work and I read it and I thought I would be a good fit for the Susan Cabot character. It’s a challenge, it’s a big challenge, but I am having a lot of fun with it. I always liked being in a group with other actors which is the case here. We cover four different tragic ends. One is Alfalfa, Carl Switzer, another is George Reeves, the Superman on TV. Then Susan Cabot. I guess you would call her a B movie actress and didn’t have a pleasant end in life. Then Barbara Payton who was also an actress and had a rough road. These are the four characters that are covered in the four acts.
Eli Marcus: What really intrigued you about this Play, what made you really sold on this, what really sung to you?
Sean Young: I felt I could do a really good job with it, let’s call it I felt like I could be of service to the director.
Eli Marcus: That’s another kind of twist. Most people are self-centered and you are like you could be of service to the Director, wow!
Sean Young: Self-centeredness is one of those qualities that show up quite a lot in show business. I have reached some enlightenment in life. I have a pretty much blissful life every single day I wake up. I appreciate things. I learned a lot. I’ve become very wise. I am capable of humility. I really like people in general unless they prove to me I shouldn’t. So it’s a good group, and I am having a lot of fun and I am enjoying working.

There are costume designers who dress performers, and then there was Bob Mackie, who understood that sometimes a costume could become as famous as the person wearing it. Mackie, the legendary designer whose feathers, beads, rhinestones, sequins and wicked sense of theatricality helped define American glamour for more than half a century, died September 14 in Palm Springs, California. He was 87. His death from pneumonia was confirmed by his longtime design director, Joe McFate.

Cher may have been his most enduring canvas, but Mackie’s extraordinary list of women included Carol Burnett, Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Bernadette Peters, Liza Minnelli, Mitzi Gaynor, Bette Midler and Ann-Margret. He understood something essential about stars: you weren’t simply dressing a body. You were helping create the image the audience would remember. For Dolly, that included the glorious butterfly gown she wore for the 1979 television special Dolly & Carol in Nashville, another perfect marriage of Mackie’s extravagance and a performer whose personality could actually carry it.

And remember we did.
Mackie created Cher’s daring, feathered sheer ensemble for the 1974 Met Gala and the enormous feathered headdress and midriff-baring black ensemble she wore to the 1986 Academy Awards—looks that helped change what a woman could wear on a red carpet. Decades before today’s stars routinely arrived at premieres dressed to become the next morning’s photograph, Mackie and Cher understood fashion as an event.

But Mackie could be every bit as brilliant when the point was laughter rather than seduction. His work throughout the 11-year run of The Carol Burnett Show demonstrated an entirely different side of his genius. His most famous comic creation remains the green velvet curtain dress Burnett wore as Starlett O’Hara in the legendary Gone With the Wind parody “Went with the Wind!”—complete with the curtain rod still running through the shoulders. The joke worked because Mackie didn’t design something merely ridiculous. He made it ridiculous and fabulous.
His relationship with Broadway stretched across nearly five decades. Mackie’s Broadway costume credits began with the 1971 revival of On the Town, followed by Lorelei in 1974, where he designed Carol Channing’s costumes, Debbie in 1976, Platinum in 1978, The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public in 1994 and Moon Over Buffalo in 1995. He designed Carol Burnett’s costumes for the 1999 Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s Putting It Together and Liza Minnelli for Minnelli on Minnelli that same season. In 2009, he designed Bernadette Peters’ gowns for her special Broadway concert benefiting Broadway Barks and Broadway Cares.

Then came The Cher Show. Opening at the Neil Simon Theatre on December 3, 2018, the musical told Cher’s life through three actresses portraying the star at different stages of her career. There was really only one person who could design the costumes. Mackie had not simply dressed Cher during that history. He was part of the history.

In one of Broadway’s more delicious pieces of theatrical symmetry, Bob Mackie became a character in The Cher Show while simultaneously designing the clothes surrounding that character. Michael Berresse portrayed him onstage, while the real Mackie recreated some of the extraordinary looks that had helped construct Cher’s public image over the preceding half-century. The production contained hundreds of costumes, including painstaking recreations of some of Cher’s most recognizable Mackie creations.

In 2019, Broadway finally gave him the prize that had somehow eluded him. Bob Mackie won the Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Musical for The Cher Show. He also won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for the production. Remarkably, despite a Broadway career dating to 1971, The Cher Show brought him his first Tony nomination—and his first win.

There is something particularly satisfying about that award. Mackie had spent his career creating clothes for people who walked onto stages to receive trophies. This time, he was the one walking up to collect one.

Broadway was only one part of an enormous career. Mackie won nine Emmy Awards, received three Academy Award nominations and was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2002. His film work included Oscar-nominated designs for Lady Sings the Blues, Funny Lady and Staying Alive. In 2019, the Council of Fashion Designers of America honored him with its Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award.

His influence never became trapped in the era that made him famous. Generations of younger performers and designers continued rediscovering Mackie’s work, and his designs have been worn or referenced by contemporary stars including Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Zendaya. What once scandalized red carpets eventually became the vocabulary of the red carpet itself.

That may be Mackie’s greatest legacy. He understood that glamour did not have to apologize for itself.

He was not afraid of too many feathers, too many beads, too much sparkle or a woman walking into a room fully aware that every eye was about to turn toward her. Yet beneath all that extravagance was extraordinary technical discipline. Those costumes had to move. They had to survive dancing, quick changes, television schedules and eight-performance Broadway weeks. Fantasy only looks effortless when someone has done an enormous amount of work.
Mackie’s life also contained profound personal loss. His only son, Robin, died in 1993 from an AIDS-related illness, and his longtime partner and fellow costume designer Ray Aghayan died in 2011. Mackie is survived by his former wife, Lulu Porter, his granddaughter Alyssa Townsend and great-granddaughters Kyla and Keira Townsend.

Those images remain because Mackie understood that costume design isn’t decoration. At its best, it tells us who someone is before that person has said a word.

A KIMMEL COLD? — Jimmy Kimmel came back from his summer vacation Tuesday night to rumors that ABC/Disney was canceling his show. Could it be Trump? That FCC guy Brendan Carr? Believe me, the crazy is definitely out there!
By morning’s light, it was flagged as just a bad, bad rumor. I mean, could Trump have won?
Kimmel, coming back from a two-month summer vacation, could definitely could have used the added juice, but Kimmel didn’t address it at all. Rather, he cited all the things that had gone wrong when he left when … and that they are pretty much still in play. In other words, he essentially stayed the same too!

When Kimmel was silenced the first time, I knew it was a bad thing, but that said, he does seem to go a tad overboard. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I miss Carson; Cavett; and Letterman and, yes, even Merv! As these four were really masters of their craft and try as the new kids on the block might, it’s nowhere the same and ultimately a bit embarrassing.

Tom Jones is saying that he was fired from the U.K. version of “The Voice” after nine seasons. What on earth are they thinking? Jones was the ONLY reason to watch the show, often coming up to sing with some of the contestants or on his own … truly a joy to watch as his voice hasn’t lost any of its magic over the years. The general consensus seems to be that their feeling was Tom was getting “too old” … at one point, a comment was even made that he was uninsurable. I say, buy the program right out from under ‘em, Tom … and sack the whole lot. Then, go out and hire Lulu, Barry Gibb and Donovan Leitch to be your co-coaches / judges / and mentors and watch the program soar … prove to the entertainment world once and for all that there is no substitute for talent (both having it and recognizing it), knowledge and wisdom … just imagine what this panel could do to inspire tomorrow’s wannabes!) Sir Tom is that rare exception to the rule of an 86-year-old who can still belt them out with the best of them. He certainly deserves better than this. 9/11 — I live right over the Brooklyn Bridge and right before 9/11 happened, I was actually summoned to a meeting a few blocks from the World Trade Center. When the attacked happened, I clearly didn’t go, but picked up my daughter up from school safely. As I entered the school, which was in a state of shock, I saw kids distraught everywhere and I girl I knew came up to and asked why it was snowing. I had never experienced anything like this.
In fact, no one had.
I ambled up to my roof and watched for a mere second what was evolving and turned away. It was a day that changed everything.
That night, I walked around and everything was covered in soot. It was something out of a horror movie. I could only bear it for seconds.
COVID was the next step. There were similarities, but somehow, I knew it would be resolved.
I heard that 1/3 of all people are now told the 9/11 story as they weren’t alive then.
I can’t quite believe it’s been 25 years; as sometimes it feels like yesterday. I try not to think about it, but how can you not. The reasons why are still murky and I guess they aways will be, but should something like that even deserved to have happened?

EARTH, WIND & FIRE DOC — With some downtime this weekend, I dialed up the HBO/MAX doc on Earth, Wind & fire called Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs That’s the Weight of the World), and it was actually one of the best I’ve yet seen. To be honest, it focused almost solely on the mastermind of the group Maurice White.

To me, fashioning a group, budling an image and achieving some degree of success is a monumental task. I’ve personally seen too many bands or artists completely miss it. But what White was able to accomplish is astonishing.
I first became aware the band through some amazing albums and of course, their song “September” sealed the deal.
White passed in 2016, so the footage of him is all archival and the current interviews with producers., relatives and band members tale on an. But the remembrances of everyone from Stevie Wonder, to manager Bob Cavallo, Flea, and the Obamas is marvelous. Its of the same caliber as HBO’s Billy Joel doc from last year.

DOLENZ ON CARTER — Micky Dolenz was interviewed on KLOS/Breakfast with The Beatles Sunday with Chris Carter, and it was a good one, as Carter discussed Dolenz’s just-released EP Timeless, featuring the singles “Terri” and “Any Way You Want Me To.” Carter also played Dolenz’s recordings of “Good Morning Good Morning” and “Blackbird” which remain standouts.
Carter said that his “Good Morning Good Morning” was one of the most requested non-Beatle songs on his show for years. btw: That track is from Dolenz’s stunningly good Remember album in 2012.
With the official 60th anniversary show this Saturday at The United Theater Downtown. Congrats also to Carter for his 25th anniversary of his show. Brilliant!
SHORT TAKES — When Apple’s Silo first stated, I watched the first episode and just couldn’t get into it. I’ve gone back and become a die-hard fan. It’s a bit hard to follow at time, but their Season 3 finale was last week and a rip-roaring affair it was. There was also a trailer for their next and final season (already filmed) which was phenomenal. It’s become one of Apple’s golden eggs. Rebecca Ferguson is sensational … RIP Jon Small from Billy Joel-fame. Oasis has always been a mixed bag for me. I love their music – ‘Wonderworld” is a stone cold classic, but the rivalry between the two brothers, Liam and Noel casts a real, down note for me. Their new doc Don’t Look back In Anger should prove interetsing. HONEY MONEY NO MORE? — News that Maria Bartiromo was fired from Fox reverberated around the world and generated a literal ton of ink.

With high-powered pit-bull lawyer Bryan Freedman (fresh from the Blake Lively/Just Baldoni mess) on the case, who knows what will happen.
She first gained notoriety as ‘Money Honey’ and has been a star for years.
(Via Showbiz 411) Maria Bartiromo’s new Hollywood lawyer has something to say. Bryan Freedman says Maria was not fired by Fox News, that she’s still an employee, and all reports to the contrary are false.
You can see his statement below.
Freedman also says there’s no truth to the reports that Bartiromo was acting as a double agent, feeding Donald Trump and Fox News with info about each other. Believe me, I know that when Fox News breaks up with you, it isn’t pretty. It’s not their style. In the end, they will have to pay out her contract. But for now, lots of posturing on both sides.
For many years, Maria Bartiromo hosted three number one rated television shows on Fox channels. She has been, without question, one of the hardest working journalists throughout her award-winning career.
The irresponsible reports that have been published stating that Maria Bartiromo was fired or is no longer an employee of Fox are absolutely and unequivocally false. Make no mistake, we have the receipts and witnesses and they will come out whether through the courthouse or otherwise. Those reporting her firing or the incredulous facts supporting that fiction have exhibited a complete and utter reckless disregard for the truth.

Klum served as a judge on America’s Got Talent from 2013 to 2018, before returning from 2020 to 2024. On Friday’s Today Show, Al Roker caught with the infamous Mr. T from The A-Team. Who says you can’t get a doc made? Mr. T’s one is out now on Netflix … Much ink this week about Miley Cyrus changing her name to just Miley; and a new album appears with the single “Bass Persuades.” The song is typical high-energy Miley, but the video looks like a combo of the best parts of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video and Debbie Gibson’s “Electric Youth” video. What Remains Unclear: HBO Max hasn’t detailed how long each episode will run or how much material from the weekly SiriusXM broadcast will make the cut. The companies also haven’t announced whether episodes will remain available indefinitely after their Thursday premieres.
What It Means: The partnership gives Stern another major distribution outlet while HBO Max gains one of radio’s most recognizable personalities. Moreover, the move could introduce Stern’s celebrity interviews and signature conversations to viewers who don’t subscribe to SiriusXM. For SiriusXM, the deal also creates another avenue to showcase one of its biggest stars.

Say and think what you will, but Howard Stern remains a major, major force. The death of his uber agent Don Buchwald and the retirement of SirusXM’s Mel Karmazin hit him hard, but he keeps moving forward. His interviews nowadays are only with the top marquee names out there and actually, very well done. I’ve known him for years and remain in awe.
