The Met Opera Broadcasts Live in Times Square With Tristan Und Isolde

New Yorkers and opera lovers will be given a special treat on September 26th. Live from Lincoln Center will present the opening night Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” live in Times Square. This year’s viewing will mark the 11th year the opera’s opening night has streamed live.

To coordinate with the broadcast “The Midnight Moment” created by artists Elizabeth Peyton and Kristian Emdal have created a “prologue” to Tristan and Isolde’s romance. From 11:57 p.m. to midnight, each night in in September, the electronic billboards will be filled with  short film called “Tantris” (Young Tristan). This will be a dreamlike exploration of Tristan’s young life before he took Princess Isolde of Ireland to Cornwall to marry his uncle… and became a part of the epic love story that has been told and retold for centuries.”

Live-action footage inspired by a 13th-century adaptation of the legend is interspersed with Peyton’s artwork and video clips in the film.

Times Square Alliance president Tim Tompkins stated: “For 11 years, we’ve been working with the Met Opera to bring live screenings of their operas to Times Square, and each year we expand our ambitions for the public’s experience. This year, Midnight Moment celebrates medieval tales, the sublime German romanticism and contemporary artistry of the world’s leading technology platforms.
