The Scarlet Pimpernel To Be Performed in Concert Thanks to Manhattan Concert Productions

A swashbuckling musical adventure the likes of which Broadway had never seen before, opened in 1997 to a critically acclaimed three year run on Broadway. Now The Scarlet Pimpernelwith a score by Frank Wildhorn and  lyrics and book by Nan Knighton, The Scarlet Pimpernel will enjoy a one-night-only concert revival as part of Manhattan Concert Productions Broadway Series, helmed by two-time Tony nominated director and choreographer Jeff Calhoun February 18, 2019 at 8:00 pm.

A glorious window into 18th century history, the production is based on the iconic 20th century novel by Baroness Orczy and chronicles the political and social turmoil of the French revolution. During the growing tumult of its early years, a mysterious English nobleman known only as The Scarlet Pimpernel saves French aristocrats from the sharp bite of the guillotine. By day and out of disguise, he masquerades as the dandy Sir Percy Blakeney. When he falls for the exquisitely beautiful actress Marguerite St. Just, he becomes involved in a love triangle that endangers his plans to save Louis XVII as well his his masked identity.

Jason Howland(Music Director) will lead this concert performance of The Scarlet Pimpernel featuring a chorus of over 200 singers from across the United States, a stunning professional cast and creative team, and the outstanding New York City Chamber Orchestra.

The Scarlet Pimpernel joins MCP’s previous Broadway Series concert performances, which include Broadway Classics in Concert (2018), Crazy for You (2017), The Secret Garden (2016), Parade (2015), Titanic (2014), The Hunchback of Notre Dame workshop (2014), Broadway Classics in Concert (2013), and Ragtime (2013).

Manhattan Concert Productions (MCP) is an esteemed Production Company in its 20th Anniversary season. MCP has provided performance and travel opportunities to thousands of musicians in choirs, bands, and orchestras at famous venues throughout the United States and many countries abroad. The guest musicians of The Scarlet Pimpernel chorus will spend five days in New York City rehearsing and performing with the professional cast and crew as part of Manhattan Concert Productions’ continuing mission of student and professional collaboration. Suzanna, co-owns and publishes the newspaper Times Square Chronicles or T2C. At one point a working actress, she has performed in numerous productions in film, TV, cabaret, opera and theatre. She has performed at The New Orleans Jazz festival, The United Nations and Carnegie Hall. She has a screenplay and a TV show in the works, which she developed with her mentor and friend the late Arthur Herzog.
