Theatre News: Rebecca Luker in Song, Tony Awards, Lea Michele, Bad Cinderella, Harmony, Spamalot, Pulitzer and Shucked

Julie Benko, Nikki Renée Daniels, Ali Ewoldt, More Will Celebrate Rebecca Luker in Song at Symphony Space. In 2018, three-time Tony nominee Rebecca Luker passed away in December 2020 from ALS, took the stage at Symphony Space to perform 18 songs written especially for her as part of a project known as The Rebecca Luker Songbook. On May 22, a host of Broadway artists will gather at that Manhattan venue to perform other works from this project in an evening titled The Rebecca Luker Songbook: A Benefit Concert.

Produced by Joel Fram and Annette Jolles, who also directs, the concert will feature the talents of Julie Benko (Funny Girl), Mikaela Bennett (Encores! Golden Apple), Andréa Burns (On Your Feet!), Carolee Carmello (Bad Cinderella), Nikki Renée Daniels (Company), Laura Darrell (Dietland), Ali Ewoldt (Phantom of the Opera), Marina Kondo (KPOP), Emilie Kouatchou (Phantom of the Opera), Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder), Scarlet Strallen (Travesties), Jessica Vosk (Wicked), and Sally Wilfert (Assassins).

The evening will premiere songs by composers Carmel Dean (Renascence), Scott Eyerly (Creatures Great and Small), Jenny Giering (The Mistress Cycle), Mike Heitzman and Ilene Reid (Solana), Henry Krieger(Dreamgirls), Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family), David Loud (musical supervision for The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess), Joshua Rosenblum (Fermat’s Last Tango), Sam Willmott (Bhangin’ It), and more. Joseph Thalken is the musical director.

Attendees can expect to hear 24 songs from The Rebecca Luker Songbook, a collection of over 80 compositions inspired by and written especially for Luker.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Project ALS.

Are the Tony Awards going to happen. I am going to predict not until September/ October. Actors’ Equity Association joined the striking WGA picket lines outside of HBO and Amazon’s New York City offices today. Kate Shindle, Equity president, stated the strike’s impact on the upcoming Tony Awards is yet to be determined, but how can they happen as no union will cross a picket line.

“Equity stands unequivocally with the Writers Guild of America in their pursuit of a fair contract,” said Shindle. “The AMPTP needs to get back to the table with a serious offer that reflects the essential contributions of writers, showrunners and others to this multibillion-dollar industry.

In the news Lea Michele revealed she has already lined up another Broadway role after her revival of Funny Girl closes in September. In a new interview with Variety, she spoke out that her next show might be a revival of an already famous musical, snd teased: ‘You know it.’

The producers of Bad Cinderella announced that the final performance of the history-making show will be on Sunday, June 4 at the Imperial Theatre. Speaking of this has anyone seen the video that was streamed live on YouTube? Not sure why they thought this would sell tickets.

My favorite show last season was Harmony. Directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Warren Carlyle, this show is finally coming to Broadway. Expect a fall opening at the Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre with previews starting Wednesday, October 18, ahead of a Monday, November 13 official opening night.

Collaborators Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman said, “Broadway is where we always dreamed we would be. Dreams really do come true!” Warren Carlyle added, “I’m so thrilled that we are bringing the amazing, true story of Harmony to Broadway. It’s a great honor and privilege to both direct and choreograph such an important story.”

Harmony features an original new score by legendary Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award winner Barry Manilow with lyrics and book by Drama Desk Award Winner, Bruce Sussman.

Based on the unbelievable true story, Harmony tells the tale of the most successful entertainers you’ve never heard of. . . . until now. In the 1920s and 30s, The Comedian Harmonists sold millions of records, made dozens of films, and sold-out the biggest theaters around the world. Their heavenly harmonies and musical comedy antics catapulted these six talented young men from singing in the subway tunnels of Berlin to international superstardom. What happened next is the story of Harmony.

Time to head to Kennedy Center and their production of Spamalot. The show stars Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice, School of Rock) as Sir Lancelot, James Monroe Iglehart (Aladdin, Hamilton, BCS: Guys and Dolls) as King Arthur, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer (Beetlejuice, Elf, Something Rotten!) as Lady of the Lake, Rob McClure (Mrs. Doubtfire, Beetlejuice) as The Historian/Prince Herbert, Matthew Saldivar (Honeymoon in Vegas, Broadway Center Stage: Guys and Dolls) as Patsy, Jimmy Smagula (Billy Elliot, Broadway Center Stage: Guys and Dolls, The Music Man) as Sir Bedevere, Michael Urie (Jane Anger, Broadway Center Stage: How to Succeed…) as Sir Robin, and Nik Walker (Hamilton, Ain’t Too Proud) as Sir Galahad.

The 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Drama has gone to English by Sanaz Toossi. English had its world premiere Off-Broadway at Atlantic Theater Company. The play centers around four Iranian adults preparing for the TOEFL — the Test of English as a Foreign Language, which may determine their eligibility for work, the possibility of leaving Tehran and more. Learning a new language may alter their identities but can also be the chance at a new life.

The two finalists for the Pulitzer are On Sugarland by Aleshea Harris at New York Theatre Workshop in February of 2022 and The Far Country by Lloyd Suh debuted Off-Broadway at Atlantic in November of 2022.

The Pulitzer Prize for Drama is awarded to “for a distinguished play by an American author, preferably original in its source and dealing with American life.” To be eligible, a work must be full-length and playwrights must be U.S. citizens. Plays that opened in the United States between Jan.1, 2022, and Dec. 31, 2023, were eligible for entry.

Broadway Dreams (Annette Tanner, Founder & President), a leading non-profit performing arts training program, is kicking off its 2023 Summer Intensive Tour “Immerse Yourself” this week in Nashville, TN. The organization is known for its unique brand of intensive musical theater training and master classes taught by the theater industry’s biggest stars and most influential creatives. The tour will offer intensives in twelve U.S. cities as well as London and Europa Park in Rust, Germany. Throughout the weeklong intensives, rising stars in each city will participate in masterclasses focusing on acting, vocal performance, and dance. Harold Prince Lifetime Achievement Award

Stephen McKinley Henderson has been bringing in-depth, gripping portrayals of memorable characters to the stage for over four decades. With his return to Broadway this season as Pops in “Between Riverside and Crazy,” which the Drama Desk previously nominated in 2015, this year’s Harold Prince Lifetime Achievement Award marks Henderson’s role in this powerful production as a celebration of his brilliant career.
