On view beginning June 14, 2021 Encore Community ServicesTimes Square Arts is proud to announce a new artistic experiment: a public art residency that pairs socially engaged artists with Times Square’s massive network of businesses, nonprofits, hotels, restaurants, and more to create art that tackles the social, cultural, and political challenges we face as a city and a society.
The first artist-in-residence is Christine Wong Yap, a Queens-based artist who often uses printmaking, drawing, and social practice to explore psychological well-being. Wong Yap will collaborate with Encore Community Services, a support program based in Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen that provides meals and social services to elderly New Yorkers. The resulting public art project How I Keep Looking Up — a series of flags representing the individual seniors’ sources of resilience — will be displayed in Times Square beginning on Flag Day, June 14, 2021. Leading up to the project launch, Wong Yap will hold flag-making workshops with seniors, working directly with them to share their personal stories around resilience, perseverance, and adversity. The flag fabrication will also engage costumers from the local theater community, another group that has been hard hit this past year by the closure of Broadway and other performance spaces.
This Times Square Public Artist-in-Residence program was created in response to the powerful ideas and artworks artists have generated throughout recent moments of political and cultural upheaval. The program is launched based on the belief that artists are visionary thinkers and creative problem solvers, that novel ideas and collaborations are necessary in response to the current crises, and that Times Square’s unique characteristics as both a public space and a cultural and commercial district are vital in tackling the social, cultural, and political challenges we face as a city and a society.
The residency will support one artist per year for a 6-month period who has demonstrated a collaborative practice and shows a commitment to fostering meaningful connections both within and beyond the art community. As part of the program, Times Square Arts can facilitate connections with relevant individuals and organizations in Times Square, as well as provide any resources and expertise from the broader Times Square Alliance team, with departments ranging from operations to policy and research. In addition to a fee covering the residency period, artists are eligible for funding toward the public presentation of their artwork in Times Square.
Christine Wong Yap is a project-based artist who often uses printmaking, drawing, and social practice to explore psychological well-being. She has participated in over a dozen residencies and studio programs. A longtime resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, she has lived and worked in Queens, NY since 2010.
Encore Community Services was founded in 1977, by Sr. Lillian McNamara, Sr. Elizabeth Hasselt and Fr. George Moore to provide food, socialization and support for the elderly of the Hell’s Kitchen and Broadway communities. What started as a single community center in the basement of St. Malachy’s Church has since grown into a multipurpose, nonsectarian agency providing a comprehensive array of programs and services to elderly New Yorkers. Each year Encore provides over 400,000 meals; both on-site, at our senior center and delivered directly to our homebound members.
In addition to providing meals and social services to the elderly, Encore also operates the Encore 49 and Encore West Residences. The Encore 49 Residence provides an SRO-style supportive housing facility for formerly homeless seniors with special needs. In a safe, clean and caring environment, residents are provided with their own units, and a range of mental health services. The Encore West Residence provides 84 independent housing units for the very low-income elderly.
Encore strives to provide a safe and welcoming environment to any senior that may need us, from meals, to social services, to housing; Encore’s philosophy remains the same: “By nurturing, respecting and enabling, Encore hopes to improve the quality of life of older New Yorkers in need, in an approach that emanates from the core of Encore’s commitment: we believe that what we do comes from the heart and the heart is the center of all.”

The exhibition will feature more than 100 major artworks by important Black American, African, and African diasporic artists including Gordon Parks, Kehinde Wiley, Hassan Hajjaj, Barkley L. Hendricks, Lorna Simpson, and Amy Sherald. Brooklyn Museum.
2/23: Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature at the Morgan Library & Museum will celebrate the works of beloved English author Beatrix Potter.
2/25: Chinatown’s annual Lunar (Chinese) New Year Parade with dragon dancing, stunning outfits, martial art performers and more. Head to Chinatown for the Lunar New Year Parade, which celebrates the year of the dragon. Bayard Street between Mott and Mulberry Streets.
2/25: The Metropolitan Museum of Art “The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism,” the exhibit will present 160 works exploring how Black artists portrayed everyday modern life in the new Black cities that took shape in the 1920s-40s in New York City’s Harlem, Chicago’s South Side and nationwide amid the Great Migration.

Clarendon Fine Art Unveils ‘All You Need Is Art’ Solo Exhibition By Mr. Brainwash
Clarendon Fine Art will launch “All You Need is Art”, a new exhibition by world-renowned contemporary pop art phenomenon and Banksy protégé Mr. Brainwash on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at its U.S. flagship gallery at 22 Main Street in Westport, Conn. The exhibition, which celebrates the gallery’s first anniversary in the States, is free and open to the public through February 8.
As part of its U.S. launch, Clarendon is pleased to be partnering with The Westport Museum for History & Culture, an essential American institution dedicated to the mission of Making History Whole. The gallery’s manager Eve Gianni will host an invite-only artist reception for Mr. Brainwash, AKA Thierry Guetta, on February 1 and First Select woman for Westport, Jennifer Tooker will be on-site to celebrate the exhibition’s launch and the first anniversary.
The “All You Need is Art” exhibit will take over the gallery’s two floors and highlight high-value, impactful, large-scale sculptures, ‘vandalized’ canvases’, painted balloon sculptures, vibrant works on wooden panels and sections of subway trains, as well as origami sculptures that serve as miniature replicas of the artist’s famed Rodeo Drive installation. Mr. Brainwash will also release exclusive limited-edition silkscreens, marrying four of the most well-known artworks in history: Van Gogh’s Sunflowers of 1888 and Irises of 1890 and Warhol’s Hibiscus inspired Flowers of 1964 and Campbell’s Soup tin from the 1962 series.
The wide range of artworks on exhibit includes originals, collector’s editions, and sculptures across genres including landscape, wildlife, still life, figurative, and abstract. In addition, 20th-Century investment pieces from artists such as Picasso, Miro, Warhol, and Dali are displayed alongside cutting-edge pop and street artists such as Mr. Brainwash, Koons, and Banksy. At the same time contemporary artists including Christian Hook, Fabian Perez, Sherree Valentine-Daines, and the satirical British duo Connor Brothers are complemented by abstract, and landscape works from artists such as Danielle O’Connor Akiyama and Jeffrey Pratt.

Craft Front & Center At MAD
From all over the world crafts are being honored at The Museum of Art and Design (MAD). This ongoing exhibition is part of the Museum’s growing permanent collection of over 3,500 objects.
Craft Front & Center features a fresh installation of more than 60 historic works and new acquisitions dating from the golden age of the American Craft movement to the present day.
Organized into themes of material transformation, dismantling hierarchies, contemplation, identity, and sustainability, the exhibition illuminates how the expansive field of craft has broadened definitions of art.
Established at the Museum’s beginning in 1956, MAD’s permanent collection was the vision of Museum founder, Aileen Osborne Webb, the collector and philanthropist who pioneered an understanding of craft and the handmade as a creative driving force of art and design. With the aim of broadening access to the collection’s holdings, Craft Front & Center will be periodically updated with new displays of rarely seen works and recent additions, as well as inspiration for hands-on workshops and off-site field trips.

Thanks to Barbara Tober, I was invited to a sit down dinner on the 7th floor, which I highly recommend if you want to throw an effective event, that will wow on every level, this is the place.
We were served a Roasted Acorn Squash ($17) inside was a Quinoa Salad, Pomegranate, Roasted Pumpkin Seeds and Maple Yogurt Dressing that was light, refreshing and so fresh. I would come back simply for this dish. Every bite was a treat to your senses.
For the main course, a perfectly French dish of Beef Bourguignon made with bacon lardons, carrots, onions and mushrooms slow cooked in a rich red wine sauce. This magnificent stew was the perfect entree for a snowy night.
This was an incredible experience. From the food, to the service, and the views. I can not wait to go back.
