Tips for Dental Hygiene

Published

on

It’s easy to neglect good dental hygiene until it is too late. Avoid painful, costly, and embarrassing dental problems by following proper oral care habits.

Below are some dental hygiene tips that you can do to give your mouth all the attention it needs.

Brush your teeth twice daily

The most basic step in ensuring a healthy oral cavity, brushing your teeth should be a regular part of your everyday routine. Do it in the morning and before bedtime. Proper brushing technique removes debris, prevents plaque build-up, and gets rid of bacteria, which are the most common causes of tooth decay, gum problems, and other periodontal diseases.

Follow the right brushing technique

The recommended tooth brushing technique is called the modified bass technique. In this technique, the brush is placed at a 45-degree angle onto the front surface of the teeth with the bristles projecting into the pockets surrounding the tooth. A small circular motion (at least 20 times on each tooth) is made with the bristles into the pocket. Then, the bristles are swept from the gum line to the biting surface of the tooth brushing over the entire front surface.

It is then repeated on the inside surfaces of the teeth. The toothbrush is once again placed into the pocket at a 45-degree angle completing small circles then brush from the gum line to the biting surface of the tooth. Gently brush each tooth and never too vigorously as it can damage your teeth and gums. It is recommended that you spend at least three minutes on this routine to ensure each tooth is properly brushed and cleaned up.

Brush your tongue

Just like your teeth, the tongue harbors bacteria too, so be sure to keep it clean alongside your teeth. Usually, your toothbrush has a tongue scraper opposite the bristles. Use it to clean your tongue.

Use fluoride toothpaste

Fluoride reinforces your tooth enamel which helps fight tooth decay. Make sure to read the toothpaste label to check if it contains this element. In some cases, your dentist will prescribe a specific product that will be used along with or replace your regular toothpaste.

Floss everyday

Aside from brushing, you also need to floss your teeth daily. Unlike brush bristles, floss can reach deep down into crevices in between each tooth. You can also target food debris that might have stuck up in the pockets and difficult to remove with a brush.

Limit sugar intake

Thank your mom for warning you about sweets and candies! San Diego dentists at Bajars & Bajars explain that sugar-rich foods are the number one cause of tooth decay. Carbohydrates, the compound that make up sugar, nourish bacteria in your mouth and reacts with saliva to form an acid. Prolonged exposure to the acidic byproduct can erode the protective layer of your teeth, called enamel.

Rinse with mouthwash

Give your teeth deep cleaning by swishing with mouthwash. After brushing, rinse with a dentist-prescribed mouthwash. These oral hygiene solutions are very useful for removing a range of bacteria that cause bad breath. When choosing which mouthwash to use, make sure to check with your dentist as there are different kinds of products out there.

Use oral irrigators

A relatively new dental hygiene technique, oral irrigators use pressurized water in a pulsating or steady manner to flush out food and bacterial byproducts in your mouth.

Observe your oral cavity

Pay attention to your teeth, gums and mouth. Check if there is any inflammation or bleeding and don’t ignore pains or aches, or any unusual changes in your oral cavity. Report to your dentist any observations to make sure they’re not serious.

Visit your dentist as scheduled

Dental checkups are vital to guarantee your dental health. The time between dental appointments can vary from 3 months to 2 years, depending on your oral health needs. Avoid skipping your dental appointments. If dental procedures cause you any anxiety or fear, discuss it with your dental provider. They are more than willing to assist you in dealing with and overcoming your fear and problems. Always remember that dentists are your partners for ensuring an amazing smile!

Your smile is the first thing that people notice. As such, it is essential to keep those teeth in perfect condition through good oral hygiene. But aside from improving your outward appearance, it also gives you the confidence to face others.
