The Summer Olympics happening in 2020 in Tokyo are just around the corner and it is time to place your bets! Looking at the overall medal count, it probably comes as no surprise that the United States of America are the overwhelming favorites, sitting at -2000 odds to have the most gold medals in the tournament and -10000 odds to have the most total medals once the games are said and done. It’s fun to guess who will win the most medals and over the last three years the two countries that have come out on top have been the USA and China, who sit at +1100 odds to hoist the most medals at the end of the Summer Games. Let’s dial in a bit more and focus on one specific sport and one that is very big throughout the world, basketball.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that the United States, like being favored in the whole tournament, are the overwhelming favorites in the sport of basketball, sitting at -1050 odds to win. The USA has placed first each of the last three years while finishing top three every Summer Olympics dating back to 1984 when the games were played on their home turf in Los Angeles, California. The last time the United States have not finished inside of the Top 3 in basketball was 1980 when the games were played in Moscow. That also happened to be the only year that the United States did not place inside of the Top 3. Since basketball was introduced to the Olympics back in 1936 in Berlin, Germany, the USA has finished first 15 times out of the 19 Olympics played with basketball involved. That stat makes it all but surprising that the USA is overwhelmingly favored while the entire field sits at +550 odds to win the sport.

Looking back at the game of basketball, if you are looking to bet on this sport, why not throw some money on the field? I mean, you have to bet $1050 on the United States to win, just so you can win $100, whereas you could bet $100 on the field and possibly take home $550. While it is extremely unlikely that someone outside of the USA takes home the gold, there is always a chance. In the FIBA World Cup, the United States struggled throughout the tournament and actually finished 7th, losing to France and Serbia while also receiving tough games from Turkey and Australia. Now, the talent the USA brings to the FIBA World Cup is not the same talent they bring to the Olympics but for most other countries, they are the same, if not better. If teams have the confidence that they can beat America then they will be playing out of their minds to make their country proud and I believe the team with the best opportunity to beat them is Australia. The country and continent of Australia plays host to a multitude of NBA players, including Patty Mills, Joe Ingles, and Aron Baynes. None of these guys are unbelievable but they do play extremely well in the NBA and have played at an even higher level during international play. It will be an interesting time when the 2020 Tokyo Olympics roll around but one thing is for sure, the United States of America is once again lined up to take their 16thgold medal in the sport of basketball.
