This morning at 10:52am in Central Park an “homemade” explosive device, has blown the foot off 18 year old tourist, Connor Golden. Mr Golden stepped on something as he was climbing rocks with friends Thomas Hinds, 20, and Joseph Stabile, 18.
NYPD Deputy Chief John O’Connell said that there was no evidence related to terrorism. The officer stated that it was not unusual for people to experiment with homemade explosives and fireworks around the 4th of July. The fact that his two friends were unharmed and that the damage was only to one leg, means it was not intended to harm anyone. It was in an area where people do not normally go. However, a bomb squad expert stated that building a device such as this would require a good knowledge of chemistry – but nothing that couldn’t be gleaned from an internet search. Police are continued to look for more explosives and believe it had been there for at least a day..
Golden, was visiting New York from Fairfax, Virginia and was taken to Bellevue Hospital. He is currently undergoing surgery and is considered stable.
The blast was close to where the funeral for Holocaust survivor and Nobel winner Eli Wiesel was taking place at Fifth Avenue and East 62nd Street.
