Trying to Raise a Teenaged Boy

Published

on

Raising a teenage boy is more art than science. Those years between his time as a pre-teen and when he’s an independent man are essential. No one will ever tell you what would a 13-year-old boy like for his birthday or give you any insights into how to adapt your communication with them.

There are a few things you can expect when dealing with a boy in his teenage years.

They want you to listen.

Your son will already know what you think about pretty much everything. This is a period in his life where he needs you to listen. Try only to offer an opinion if you are asked.

They will think it’s all about them

Children believe that the universe revolves around them. As your teenage boy grows, he’ll have to learn that they aren’t entitled to everything they want.

They need to learn about different people

The teenage years are the time to teach your boy that people who live and look differently need to be respected. Encourage your teenager to travel outside their community and interact with a wide variety of people.

Educate them about empathy.

The teenaged brain is just developing the ability to have empathy. Encourage your teenage boy to put himself in other people’s shoes and try to think about how they might feel.

They’ll learn not everyone has to like them.

While most groups of kids played nicely together when they were younger, different personalities emerge during the teenage years. Teaching your teenager that they can’t force someone to like them is essential so that they can accept the situation and move on.

You won’t get instant compliance

You can’t expect your teenage son to jump when you ask him to do something immediately. Give him the space to finish whatever he’s doing before he gives you his attention.

They will have to learn about different points of view.

It’s important to teach your teenage son that there are many ways to look at a situation. While younger kids are always convinced that their viewpoint is correct, this is an age where boys can start to understand and interpret different ideas.

No means no.

Teenage boys need to learn about consent. Guide them through possible scenarios and how they should handle them. Give them the tools they need to make sound decisions on how to treat and act around women.

Talking in the car will lead to openness.

Because driving in a car doesn’t allow for much eye contact, teenagers often communicate most openly when driving in a car with their parents. Use this time to listen to your teenager.

Instant gratification isn’t always the best.

This is a reasonable period to start teaching your child about the benefits of delayed gratification. Having self-control will give your child a leg up in many situations in the future.

They will learn how to take responsibility.

Life will not always be fair. Teach your teenage son to take responsibility for his decisions so that he can work towards changing circumstances that he doesn’t like.

Brown and associate chorographer Rickey Tripp featuring the New York Liberty mascot, Ellie the Elephant, and dance team, as well as an on-court giveaway where two fans will have the chance to win tickets to an upcoming Hell’s Kitchen performance.

Ali is a 17-year-old girl full of fire – searching for freedom, passion and her place in the world. How she finds them is a New York City coming-of-age story you’ve never felt before – Hell’s Kitchen, a new musical from 16-time Grammy® Award winner Alicia Keys, whose songs and experiences growing up in NY inspire a story made for Broadway.

Rebellious and stifled by an overprotective single mother, Ali is lost until she meets her mentor: a neighbor who opens her heart and mind to the power of the piano. Set to the rhythm of the 90s, Hell’s Kitchen is a love story between a mother and daughter.  It’s about finding yourself, your purpose, and the community that lifts you. Come remember where dreams begin.

The “powerhouse cast” is led by Tony Award® winner Maleah Joi Moon, Shoshana Bean, Brandon Victor Dixon, Tony Award® winner Kecia Lewis and Chris Lee. Hell’s Kitchen is directed by four-time Tony Award® nominee Michael Greif, with choreography by four-time Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown, a book by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony Award nominee Kristoffer Diaz – and the music of Keys, featuring new songs and her greatest hits.

The Hell’s Kitchen Original Broadway Cast Recording is available now via Alicia Keys Records/Interscope Records on streaming and digital platforms worldwide with a physical release to follow.
